    Linux Distro question

Could anyone explain the difference between two Linux/GNU distros using the same window manager and software? They use the same kernel and everything but unless I'm missing something I can't think where the differences are. Take Ubuntu and Debian for example - they both use GNOME by default and if you messed with the themes you could get them both to look the same and the also use the same form of packages.
    Thanks

    Re: Linux Distro question

    Ubuntu is based on Debian

It's like XP and Vista, you can make them look the same by using themes, but under the hood they use different protocols to do things, and some things are better then others, etc

Some distros handle some situations and tasks better than others

Thanks. I was only really considering the underlying kernel and GUI so I didn't think of everything in between.

    Re: Linux Distro question

IN the case of debian and ubuntu well ubuntu is debian but with more recent packages and some utilities to make it easier for the user. for example when you try to play a media file on ubuntu and you dont have the codec it uses a utility to check the repos you have for the missing codecs and asks the user if they want it to check and then it installs it for the user if they wish.
ubuntu also has a utility that makes it easy to install proprietary drivers such as ati and nvidia graphics drivers.

by default ubuntu has a graphical startup where as debian has a text startup.

Ubuntu has taken a stable and reliable platform and refined it so that its easier to use.

    Re: Linux Distro question

Yes, also, different distributions may use different package managers. For example, rpm instead of apt. Some distributions may be source based (e.g. Gentoo). There's a lot of variation out there.
