    Xandros

Just recently I have installed Xandros 2.0 on my PC. Had one hard disk with all of it taken as Windows 2000. Setup Xandros, asked if I wanted to resize my Windows partiton. Did it all for me, just confirmed the space, no hassle what so ever. Went on easy. Just getting used to the Debian management of things as I have been used to Red Hat rpm.

Overaul I am quite impressed with it. It even oferes Microsoft Office Cross over, which I am guessing allows you to install MS Office and other apps on the OS. Haven't tried it, but all in all I am qite happily using it instead of the Windows partition, which seems to be used only for the Worms World Party Tournament we hold at lunchtimes!

a bit expensive for Debian, but considering the hastle I've had recently getting a linux system up & running...

just remember, apt will rock yoru world. forget dependancies, just typing "apt-get install xfce4" will download xfce4 and every dependancy, and every dependancy's dependancy. "apt-get upgrade" will bring everything on your system to the latest versions.

if you want the very bleeding edge, check your /etc/apt/sources.list file - the lines
    Code:
deb ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib non-free
    deb ftp://ftp.uk.debian.org/debian-non-US unstable/non-US main contrib non-free
will give you access to most anything you could want, latest versions thereof.

http://packages.debian.org will tell you what packages are available, and what they're called.

for those who don't know, Debian is split into three versions - Stable, Testing, and Unstable.

Stable stays solid, for YEARS. The current Stable release, 3.0/Woody, still runs the 2.2 kernel.

Testing is what's being considered for inclusion in the next Stable release. 3.1/Sarge is very close to becoming the new Stable.

Unstable has all the recent stuff that you'd actually want - recent window managers, servers, browsers, etc. The USEFUL branch. unstable/Sid works fine - and we've always run Unstable on the server boxes in our house.

iirc Xandros is based on Sarge

Debian indeed rocks. Not as much as Gentoo does, but in a production environment it is definitely more suitable.

I am looking at getting another co-lo box, and was maybe going to go with a company that uses RedHat. Not having apt and the associated package database is a real downer tho
