    Expanding Partition

    Hey guys,

I want to expand my PS partition by around 5 - 10gb, I made a stupid mistake and made it a little to small so for that reason and getting those annoying messages you get saying space is low, I need to increase its size.

So can anyone recommend any applications that will allow me to do this without the possibility of data loss?

    Cheers in advance,

    Re: Expanding Partition

I've used Acronis Disk Director to resize partitions, no problems.

Alternatives: Lifehacker: EASEUS Creates and Manages Hard Drive Partitions for Free or Repartition your hard drive with a Linux live CD

Though I would still backup to another drive or to other media beforehand. Defrag the partitions too.

    Re: Expanding Partition

In Vista I THINK you can just increase it

Right Click My Computer, and choose MANAGE.
Double Click Storeage, and then Double Click Disk Management

FInd the disk, and the partition in the lower part of the screen, and right click on it and EXTEND VOLUME.

That's what I did, and so far, so good.

    Re: Expanding Partition

i had vista but the partition manager was a bit rubbish so i used easeus's partitioner. vistas only let me partition by a couple of gig and about 10 gig (maybe a bit more i cant remember) after defragging.

...which is interesting, as I increased one of my partitions by about 200Gib. As far as I can tell the only restriction is the amount of free space on the volume.

That said, it's safer (though not 100% risk free, so backup first) to go the LiveCD route - boot from a recent distro's livecd and use GPartEd to move/resize partitions while they're not mounted.

    Re: Expanding Partition

well i guess its not bad for everyone then, i just googled it and didnt find a proper answer apart from defragging which only released a little (or maybe quite i bit) more, then used easeus which did the whole 250 i wanted partitioned.

    Re: Expanding Partition

Defragging doesn't really release space though - if you don't have room on the disk it can't make some available, and under Vista there's usually a low priority defrag job that runs at idle anyways, so fragmentation shouldn't really be a massive issue.

    Re: Expanding Partition

I've recently adjusted 4 partitions in XP using PartedMagic 4.1. Booted with it and it's easier than using PartitionMagic.

I've used it in the past, but to be honest when there's a tried and tested method that's easy to use and £Free I find it hard to recommend anything else.

You would, yes. The thing is that because the filesystem isn't mounted this way is less risky than doing the operation on a live filesystem.
