    Fast boot drive

well, been looking at the hard drives and want a fast one just for booting really and a few programs.

lots to choose from!! i quite like the samsung f1 drives and the wd ones look good too. at one time the raptor was all the rage, is that still the case? are they that noisey?

just don't know where to turn when it comes to getting a new hard drive. is it worth having a drive with a big cache? so many questions!

    150 GB Western Digital WD1500BLFS VelociRaptor, SATA 3Gb/s, 10000rpm, 16MB Cache, 4.2 ms

or is the smaller ones ok, 30+ gb? really unsure so need some guidance.

if not the above which drive would be best? don't want a large gb drive.

Raptors were the rage when you could spend any amount of money for the fastest you could get. Now that place is very firmly filled by SSDs, with the Intel ones top of the pile. Even the cheaper SSDs will make a much faster boot drive than Raptors or any other mechanical drive. Unless you can't afford them, in which case we need to know your budget.

    Re: Fast boot drive

If you've got the money, go for a 60Gb SSD Vertex drive from OCZ. Pretty much perfect as a boot drive - fast as lightning at booting stuff and silent as well.

    Re: Fast boot drive

Your probably better off posting in hardware!

I'm very much on the flash memory rules side of the debate.

My work desktop is been upgraded with one of these:
    http://www.fusionio.com/ioxtreme/
as soon as they are in the UK, but this is kinda a big difference in price, the 30GB SSDs i find are quite good, i use one in my media PC (which was built to be passive, no sounds) the performance is very good, installing an app/copying files is acceptable, thou not great. But every day app saving a file, such as cover art, is much faster than my 15k RPM SCSI drives (which beat the living daylights out of the WD offerings).

But 30gb really isn't enough for much more than OS + Pagefile + 2 Games.

So whats ur budget, and how important is the speed of an application opening, vrs say video editing.

Anyway, to answer your questions (sorry guys, without getting into an SSD circle jerk). The new 2.5" velociraptors are very quiet, much quieter than the old 3.5" Raptors. Disks with low access time don't need as much cache, 16mb is plenty. And 150gb is generally plenty for an OS disk. Depending on what you do with your OS, of course.

    Re: Fast boot drive

SSD is going to be the fastest. I have a raptor 150 X in my g/f's PC and its fast but man is it noisy!

    Re: Fast boot drive

I would get a larger drive, eg a single platter 320GB, then short stroke it down to 70~GB, will perform exceedingly fast.

    Re: Fast boot drive

Just use a partition at the start of the drive (and partition the rest as data) - you could use defrag tools to place the data at the start of a partition anyway so there's actually no need to partition if you don't want to.

    Re: Fast boot drive

Ok, thanks. So, just get a good 320g hard drive? Better than a smaller faster rpm drive like the wd rapors?
