Easy (one step) DVD backup to divx

Hi guys, i not had much luck googling for what im after, so just want to know if there is any app out there that simply backs up a standard dvd film to a divx avi file. Something easy and straight forward just click and done. I have tons of old dvd films that i want to box up and put in the loft to clear some space, and i will first put copies of these films along with other avis i have on my PC.

Some software i have tried has like 10 steps to achieve what i want to do but invariably ends up failing at some step. The dvd ends up ripped to loads of different files that never seem to make just one avi. Does anything exist like this?, or do you have to go through copying/converting loads of bits together just to get one film/avi.

    Any recommendations gratefully excepted

It's currently illegal to transfer copyright content of a DVD to another medium in this country.

Yeah, i know the legal point of view, and its preposterous in this regard, seeing as i have paid for and own the content.

Oh well if you own all the rights to the content then why don't you make copies for all of us while you're at it?

If you own the rights then you can set your own price presumably.

    Who said anything about rights?

I just want a copy of content for myself for my own purpose that i have paid for. Your advocating buying content that you may have not paid for? See the difference.

Re: Easy (one step) DVD backup to divx

I thought it was legal, as long as you didn't give it to someone else? I'm pretty sure you're allowed to make a backup of any media you own (Vista specifically states you are allowed to make 1 backup copy of the installation media) and that's what the OP wants to do right? And what about mp4 players - most people who own one rip a DVD to play on it. I'm no lawyer so I'm not sure but if it's the case you're not allowed to rip a DVD you paid for onto a HDD then I agree with the OP. Personally I use mostly open source software for the same reason.

And there's the whole CD->MP3 thing which *everyone* does.

But you haven't paid for the rights to make copies for yourself. You've just paid for the right to watch the film off the supplied media.

Not in the UK. In the US you sometimes have the right to make a backup - but still not bypass any copyright protection.

(Vista specifically states you are allowed to make 1 backup copy of the installation media)
Yup, if the license holder grants you additional rights to make a copy then that's fine, but I've not seen many films with that.

It's still illegal, just not enforced. Unlike film ripping, which is illegal and enforced.

Sorry, but due to the legal issues this is never something we have allowed discussion of

I know it's a pain, but as a business we have to be really careful with things like this.

    Hope you understand mate
