    Ubuntu Partial Update

What exactly does it mean when the Ubuntu update manager says something about a partial update? I clicked check for update then when the list was downloaded it warned about a partial update. The kernel was one included update. Might this have something to do with me manually editing GRUB's menu.lst to add other OSes or is it normal?
    Thanks

A "partial upgrade" (the term is nasty) means an upgrade which adds or removes another package. Usually, with the exception of kernels, an upgrade only upgrades the exact package selection on disk - any change to that status quo is considered a "partial upgrade"

If you know the apt commands, it's the difference between "apt-get upgrade" and "apt-get dist-upgrade" in behaviour.

Thanks. It was a kernel upgrade that caused it I think and when I updated it I didn't get the warning again. Just to confirm, what's the best way to update menu.lst I chose the option that was something like 'use the package manager's menu.lst'. I originally had Suse (I'm just trying it out of interest) under the debian list and it was obviously removed by the update so I added it to the bottom of the file, under Windows.

That's a reasonable way to do it

Basically, any boot options before or after the AUTOMAGIC KERNEL lines are not deleted on upgrade - they're kept and not touched.

    Re: Ubuntu Partial Update

Yeah I only realised that when the updater asked me what to do with menu.lst. Luckily I had a copy of menu.lst on my desktop including the Suse stanza so it was just a matter of copying it over. BTW am I right in thinking it's best to keep old versions of the kernel as backups or should I remove them from menu.lst / fully remove them.
I like the way configuration files in Linux are stored in user-readable, user-editable files.
