Reinstalling Vista without losing my files!

I want to reinstall my Vista, but I want to keep all my files. A bit like the Repair install feature XP has. Is this possible?

Basically, my Windows Communications Manager doesn't work, so I can't use Live Messenger or Mail, I can't run windows update with failing, and as of today, each time I open My Computer, windows explorer stops responding.

Install the drive in a computer with a working operating system and use that to extract the files you want to keep. When you re-install the operating system, create a separate partition for your files.

If you don't have another computer, run a Linux live CD and mount the hard drive in thgat system and then use the Linux system to copy the required files onto a USB drive.

I don't see the problem, just format, re-install, and copy the files off the regular backup you have.
