Question So which OS do I buy?

    Morning!

I'm planning to build a pc in the next month and need some help choosing an OS for it. With Windows 7 coming out and so many Vistas to choose from, can somebody give me some advise on which one to buy? I've heard that some can upgrade later or something?

    Cheers,

    Could download & install Windows 7 RC1.
Ultimately you'll need to do a reinstall next summer as it ceases to work but it's free for that year.

    Thanks for all the help.

So to dowload and intall RC1, does that mean I have to already have to have a version of Vista or can I donwnload on another computer and install onto blank computer?

Re: So which OS do I buy?

You don't have to have Vista already.
You can download Windows7 RC1 on another PC (it comes as an ISO that you'll have to burn to disc) & install on your new 1 from disc.

Re: So which OS do I buy?

just remember there is no support for an RC and not all software will work properly with it yet and third party companies will only fix the errors once windows 7 final comes out.
after all the above windows 7 RC does work well and alot better than vista IMO. even windows 7 beta was better than Vista. vista added alot of stuff so there was bound to be issues. vista's file copying is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo sllllllllllllllllooooooooooooooooow even with SP2. file copying with windows 7 is as it should be.

Re: So which OS do I buy?

It would probaly be easier to list the software you use and im sure i can tell you if it works on windows 7.

everything that I use on vista home premium 64bit works on windows 7. there isnt windows 7 realtek drivers for my wireless card but the vista drivers work fine.
windows 7 has the same OOTB experience as vista does (on my hardware) aka no creative x-fi and no wireless. surely networking is one of the most important OOTB?

Everything that worked on my vista setup works fine on Win7 x64 picks up all latest drivers with update, go for Win7 until next year then buy it when its released, much much better than vista even on a low spec machine.

Re: So which OS do I buy?

Just did a clean install of Win7 RC on my HP laptop. And I was pretty suprised at how everything worked almost instantaneously. Wireless, sound, webcam, bluetooth, finger print reader, display, function controls like brightness and volume. I actually didnt have to install any drivers. Saying that tho, Windows Update did detect some updates, like graphic driver (the ones it updated with were also outa date so I had to do it manually), Realtek sound drivers and a few more, but after that everything worked perfectly.

I was actually initally skeptical of doing a clean install as I was scared that with the proper HP drivers the laptop wouldnt sleep or hibernate properly, or wouldnt auto sleep when I closed the lid or the finger print reader wouldnt work, but win7 has practially everything needed already built-in, even biometics

I have never had a shock like the first time I installed Windows XP on a legacy laptop (Dell Latty C600, as it happens). Since I was used to building desktops and never bothered to plug the speakers in during install, I hadn't realised that the last few set up screens at the end of the installation played music and sounds at you!

My gaming PC / HTPC (don't ask ) has 7 RC on and it installed all the drivers straight off the DVD (as did 7 Beta, in fact). That's an ASUS P5N32-E SLI and 8800GTX, all installed properly with no issues at all. I was somewhat impressed

Enjoy 7 RC. I stuck my 3G dongle in it this afternoon when I got back from work, and here I am posting from it! Yet another "no problems" device installation from Windows 7
