    New Build - Linux/Windows 7

    Hi everyone,

I will hopefully have a few components to start putting together within a few days. I've been searching for Windows Vista software and it's well over a £100 - I didn't realise it would be so much.

I would like to avoid this cost so I was considering 2 other options. Using the RC version of Windows 7 or using Linux Ubuntu. I've already made the Ubuntu boot disk and ran it from the disk on an old PC and it seems to work OK.

There is one other option but from the info I've got from other forums it seems to be a bit dodgy; When I made the recovery disk for my Vista laptop I read somewhere in the instructions that it can be used on 1 other computer??? Not sure about this.

    Any thought or advice?

    Cheers

If the new build is intended for use 24/7, I'd be tempted to go down the Win7 route. However, the RC option is temporary of course, so you'll still have to come up with the cash next year. Ubuntu is of course free - I use it for dev work, but always switch back to Windows for general ease of use.

With regards your laptop, had you activated the copy beforehand? I'm not entirely sure of the protocol here - I had a suspicion that you were able obtain a refund for the license if it was completely unused. However true that is, I don't know...

    Thanks for reply

I bought my laptop with Windows pre-installed and made a recovery/back-up disk. But I seem to remember reading (can't remember where I saw it - on the system I think) that it may be used on another computer. I thought I may be able to install Windows from it?

My new build will be for general use. A bit of gaming and mainly editing photos (which are all backed-up on externals) I just didn't fancy buying Vista and then up-grading to 7 when that is finally released, which I thought I would probably do as everyone has been saying how good it is, when I could possibly use it until early next year and then buy it when the RC version expires?

    Extremely unlikely.

I read the license myself for my copy of Vista HP as the disc got a bit scratched and I wanted to make a backup copy - it states you are allowed to make one copy of the media for backup purposes only. I very much doubt you are allowed to transfer the OS to another computer - the only way I know you could is if you had a retail boxed copy of Vista.
As for the choice of OS - I've heard good things about Win7 (although I've not yet tried it myself) but as stated above it would only be a temporary solution. I see no reason not to give Ubuntu a try - it does take a bit of getting used to but I think it's a very good OS. You could also try a few other Linux distros (including other versions of Ubuntu such as Kubuntu which uses the KDE desktop instead of GNOME and Xubuntu which uses the more lightweight desktop Xfce) but I think Ubuntu is amongst the easiest to use.

also consider distros such as Mandriva,Mint,Sabayon etc.
one of the problems with Linux is the support cycle is very long. the Long term support distos are around 3 years max. windows,Solaris etc have a 10 year support cycle.

I would like to add that ive tested windows 7 Rc and it works fine no issues so far.

    Re: New Build - Linux/Windows 7

What are you planning to use your PC for and have you had any experience of linux before?

If you've never used linux before the distos you're talking about are easy enough to get to grips with but it is a different OS to windows and you'll have to spend some time getting used to it.

I've been using RC1 on both my PCs for a little while now (64bit on my main PC and 32bit on my HTPC) and I haven't had any significant problems yet. As said above it's free now but you'll have to pay for a full license next year.

I'm not sure recovering your Vista copy from your other laptop is entirely legal as the software is licenced to the machine, not the individual (assuming you got it as OEM).
