If I Wanted To Push Email (My Own Exchange)

If I wanted to host my own 'push email capable server' so Exchange; I dont know of any others, apart from Snow Leopard Server (not out yet)

How would I go about doing it, is it fairly easy, something you can do in a home environment?

More importantly, something I could do with VM on a Mac Mini!

Re: If I Wanted To Push Email (My Own Exchange)

    http://www.simplyms.com is who I use

I toyed with setting up my own Exchange box to learn how to use it along with Server 2003, but in reality it would probably never have worked reliably. You can also get issues with other mail servers not liking the email you send out etc.

In my opinion it's well worth the money. Having your contacts, calendar and email synced between your phone, laptop, desktop and OWA is fantastic!

Re: If I Wanted To Push Email (My Own Exchange)

Actually, it *is* rather easy. Here's how:

    1) Set up a DynDNS account (or some similar service), make sure you set the MX field to your DynDNS domain.
    2) If your router supports it, configure it to update the IP for your domain on reconnect
    3) Browse VMware's appliance portal, and pick a preconfigured mail server of your choice. Also, Some 'easy to use server' distros like SME server are very simple to use if you want to install it yourself.
    4) Reconfigure the VM to make it's virtual NIC bridged.
    5) Start it, reconfigure it's VNIC to a static IP (or if your router supports static DHCP leases, you can do that too), and do any other configurations you want to use with the mail server.
    6) Forward the appropriate ports you want to use to the VM's IP, google for "Well known port numbers" for specifics, it's mostly smtp, pop3, and imap. I don't know if VMware Fusion supports backgrounding a VM, if it does, you can do that now since you should be able to configure it through your browser.

A couple of steps involved, but clearly it can be simpler than you'd imagine. Obviously if you have a really jammy internet connection which drops frequently, you could end up with mail being bounced back to sender, but other than that, you should be fine.
