    new DHCP server

    Hi everyone,

I would like to take some control over our local network at work (which is currently managed by a BT Business Hub... eep). To do this I would like to install a DNS/DHCP server of my own. (The hub will still be providing the internet connection)

I have the DNS server configured how I want it.

Now, I have the config settings I want for the DHCP3 server but I am not sure how I go about activating a new one on a network? Do I just disable the DHCP capabilities of the hub and enable the server? Do I enable the new server first, then disable the hub?

The DHCP range of the current server is 192.168.1.10-100 and the new one will be 192.168.1.10-70. Will any machines outside of the new range be automatically assigned a new IP address when their lease expires?

Ideally I would be able to have this in some sort of test environment, but alas I do not.

    That's what I'd do.

Before that. A client will periodically check the validity of its lease by asking the DHCP server to confirm it. If the DHCP server changes then the client would not be able to get an answer from the old one and would then request an IP from the new DHCP server.

The easiest option if it's possible to do so is to shut down all the clients, change the DHCP server over and then bring up the clients again.
