Search by file type / extension in Windows 7
OK.
Simple / stupid question (delete as appropriate :p)
I like the idea of a "universal searcher" at the top right of the explorer window. But it now seems impossible to clearly define your search parameters.
I want to be able to search, for example, for all Word documents, i.e. do a search on "*.doc" or for all my MP3s, "*.mp3". That seems impossible. When you type that, it picks up anything with the string in, including text files.
I know W7 is trying to intelligently simplify OS usage, but called me old fashioned - I'd still like to search by file type.
So how? :help:
TIA :undecided

Doh!
Don't know why it didn't show up at first, but looks like you can by adding the syntax: type:= <extension> so for example; type:=.doc
:stupid:

I had the same problem on Vista. Try without the wildcard. So instead of *.doc try .doc
Sounds strange I know, but it works for me.

As time goes on, Windows is slowly removing the "old" DOS-esque ways and replacing them with more lowbrow, less computer nerd, ways of doing things.
The annoying thing is, they seem to remove the old ways completely, not just turn them off by default.

I'm noticing this increasingly. I recently worked on a new Dell Studio Laptop and noticed the Function Keys on the keyboard now have to be activated by pressing a Function Key first. And in Vista you increasingly have to rely on the mouse rather than good ol' keyboard shortcuts. Oh well...

Anyway, yes I agree to some extent, but explorer has always seemed so backward when it comes to common file system tasks. The move and copy processes in the explorer GUI for instance have been absolutely awful really. There are some improvements in Vista/7 but the lack of configuration over the way, for instance, files that are being replaced is displayed to user is woeful. And dialogues! Why in the past could you so rarely resize a dialogue window that contains a long list of columnar data.

tfboy asked a very GOOD question. First of all, hiding extensions by default is foolish, it invites executables spoofing as documents. Searching for .doc or *.doc doesn't work for me in Windows 7. It seems to require the more complicated, user hostile syntax of "type:=" WTF are they smokin' in Redmond?

Don't know, but it's a good reason to stay away from that stuff..
Finding files with specific extension is easy with the good ol' batch dir:
dir /S *.doc
This even works for
dir /S *.*~
I never find the emacs-backups (original-filname~) with windows search (type:*~)
