Smile Vista Losing All Network Settings

Hey all, got a PC that someones asked me to have a look at, its running Vista and they were complaining they couldn't connect to their broadband, which happens to be Talk Talk so my first though was to blame the ISP .

I've got it back here, put some fresh av on it and run spybot/adaware and got rid of some crap but no matter what i do, it will not keep its network settings when shut down or restarted?. It comes up as being connected to an unspecified network, with local access only and always reverts from private to public network.

Anyone come across this before?, its driving me nuts!.

I've deselected it on the properties of the network adaptor, i assume that would work?. Seemed a bit safer than messing about with the registry!.

yeah, removing IPv6 from the adapter should be enough - that usually fixes that issue. Is this a wired or wireless connection?

Are you connecting through a router with NAT and DHCP? Have you tried setting a static IP address? What is the "unspecified newtork"?

I'm connecting through my router using static ip, evrytime the pc is restarted the ip, subnet and gateway settings have been lost but the dns settings are still there. In fact, the original settings are there, but they have been bumped to being second choice for the adaptor if you see what i mean, with the 'new' settings being zeros for the ip and subnet, with the gateway address blank. Also, as menti9oned the network is changed from being private to an unspecified public network.

That's odd - you manually set a static address (or is it a reserved DHCP?) and it becomes the Alternative setup when you reboot?

Have you tried reinstalling the NIC?

Its static mate, got dhcp disabled. Just loses everything as mentioned. Have rolled back the drivers on the nic as it seems they had been updated (think that may have been the guy trying stuff before he bought it to me though), looked on the Foxconn site and there doesn't seem to be a specific driver for Vista 32 bit, so i'm just gonna disable the onboard nic and chuck a pci card in and see what happens.

Hmm... I'm definitely looking at the driver in that acse - let us know how you get on with a PCI NIC.
