    a few questions about freebsd

    Hello,
I have just installed freebsd 7.2 in a virtual machine.
I done a custom install and installed X,KDE and the gstreamer plugins.

    how do you update freebsd?
last time i installed freebsd i couldnt seem to find any sort of update manager.

the commandline parameters for updating is fine but i would also like to know where to find gui for it if there is one.
    startx doesnt work.
    thanks in advance.

Been the lazy son of a, that you all know i am, i've always prefered NetBSD, because its the debian related one.

    it uses pkgsrc.

pkgsrc has actually been ported for FreeBSD, and it is my favourate BSD package manager, its just i'd say nuts to it and just use NetBSD

Re: a few questions about freebsd

is there much benefit of using a bsd based OS rather than linux?
atm im dual booting debian Lenny and vista.
I like to try lots of different operating systems and linux distros.

once Debian GNU/kFreeBSD comes out i may try that.

Re: a few questions about freebsd

Oh this is going to end in religous debate.

BSD can often be slower than linux yes, but it can sometimes be faster too.

BSD has much better security design out of the box. The linux kernel just never makes me think "hmmm, thats clever" BSD does this every now and again.

They are both very similar really, they use ideas that are quite old in many respects, but have a look here:
    http://www.phiral.net/asmexamples.htm
so the code is really very similar.

Re: a few questions about freebsd

I didnt think there was much difference tbh.
the main benefit at least imo for running something like freebsd or solaris is ZFS
i cant wait for the debian port for freebsd. the great debian userland and applications along with the freebsd kernel and ZFS is an awesome combo.

one thing i really like about unix based operating systems is that they share stuff. If a company such as apple or MS had created a file system like ZFS I very much doubt they would share it.

what sort of things from freebsd have you thought that is a great idea?
