    HD-DVD & Blu-Ray Playback

I've just ordered a LG GGC-H20L combo drive to play both HD-DVD and Blu-ray. It'll be going in my HTPC.

What software do you use to play both formats in Windows Media Centre?

I read that only PowerDVD 7 supports both formats? Not the later verisons...

    Re: HD-DVD & Blu-Ray Playback

The drive should come with an OEM version of PDVD7, though I've not used it so can't recall if it plays HD-DVD also. Some version of PDVD are hackable to re-enable HD-DVD playback.

Personally, I'd go with Arcsoft Total Media Theatre 3, it's got pretty good WMC integration from what I've read. I don't use WMC, but use TMT3 as my player of choice.

    Re: HD-DVD & Blu-Ray Playback

    Essentially what Skinleech said

There is also a community plugin for Mediaportal that allows TMT3 to be used for HD-DVD and BluRay playback. You can get PDVD8 (not sure about 9) to playback HD-DVD but it involves hacks and you need to fix it every time you update the app.

    Re: HD-DVD & Blu-Ray Playback

The only stumbling block with TMT for me was it's insistence on installing it's own filters for .mkv which stuffed up my surround sound no end (basically made everything two channel). I've yet to put software on to run my HDDVD collection since putting Windows 7 on the HTPC though.

Was that version 3 or 2?

3 has it's filters totally contained in the app, they cannot be used outside of the software, whereas with 2 you could use the filters in a preferred media player, such as Media Player Classic. I've never had an issue like you are describing though - sounds like you need to set your favoured audio decoder as your preffered one using something like Radlight Filter Manager:

    http://www.free-codecs.com/download/...er_Manager.htm

I would guess than when installing TMT2 it has set it's own Audio decoder as the highest priority and you don;t have whatever decoder you normally use set as preferred. IIRC the TMT2 audio decoder had/has a big that always switched it back to stereo when used outside of TMT. You can use Radlight to block the TMT2 audio decoder also.

Good to know - thanks I think it was TMT2 (which seems to make sense in what you're saying). I did tract through the filters and try adjusting priorities etc but could never get everything to work satifisfactorily (i.e. fixed outside TMT meant TMT itself was broken and vice versa) which was very irritating. Sounds like they've recognized this if they've gone down the all-in route with their app!
TMT integrates far better than PDVD for me too - the blocking issue was as stated so if they've resolved that all the better.

I also use AnyDVD HD too - it simplifies playback issues by waxing the irrelevant copy protection

Looks like its going to be TMT 3 then! I've already got AnyDVD HD installed so that should sort me out nicely for my drive arriving tomorrow

Just beware TMT3 doesn't support vista 64. I made this expensive mistake. But the version of PDVD7 you get with the drive works fine on both.

Thats good to know. That settles the argument I was having with myself about re-building my HTPC with Vista 32bit vs 64bit

    Re: HD-DVD & Blu-Ray Playback

That's odd... after seeing the mention of TMT3 here, and having weird issues with PowerDVD ("No disc in drive" message on inserting a DVD, subtitles that vanish for a few seconds periodically) and seeing the confirmation that it plays HD-DVD as well as BD, I downloaded the trial.

It was installed on my Vista Ultimate x64 SP2 HTPC and I checked it with 1 HD-DVD and 1 BD (no sound due to Dolby codec not bundled in the trial version, but it displayed a message to tell me this).
Looked good, had the extra menu option from Media Center, so I splashed out for the Platinum version.

Removed the trial, installed the licensed version and rebooted, verified playback of the HD-DVD & BD again (with sound now), and played a DVD with it later last night.

You must be just lucky mate posts on forums and official reply from Arcsoft and site only supports vista 32.

Could be that if you have the right set of drivers etc. then it will work, but remains unsupported by Arcsoft, so if you have problems they are for you to sort out.

Though I would guess that if anyone can get it working on Vista 64 it would be Paul

I'm sticking with 32bit for the HTPC - only 2gb of RAM anyway. It's running W7 now though for the freesat support (and it's a darn sight quicker than Vista!)

Hmm, while the Requirements for TMT3 say...
    Requirements
Windows XP SP2 32-bit and Windows Vista 32
... I found this in the update list for TMT2
    2008-09-19 / 2.1.6.125
    Improved features:
    Vista 64-bit support
    Odd.
Maybe I'll mail support later to see if their system requirements page is just out of date.

I had that with the trial version until I rebooted the machine (as it told me to, but I ignored it at first heh).
