Ubuntu 9.04 - whine when *not* under load...

    Hi guys,

I recently installed ubuntu 9.04 (32bit) and now my pc whines when its not under load. Vista is fine but Ubuntu is driving me crazy.

Has anyone else experienced this before?

I think i'll try the x64 flavour and see if that fixes it... I had 8.10 64bit before with no whine.

I've tried googling but cant find anything specific - most threads are about whining speakers, this is definately coming from the motherboard/somewhere inside my pc.

    Mark

I've not experienced it with Ubuntu, but I've heard whines come from graphics cards when they hit a 2d screen that they can draw stupidly fast - turning on something like V-sync helped.

If the whine came from your graphics card, then I had the same issue. The problem was fixed by installing the proprietary drivers (menu System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers) instead of the default open source (I was using nvidia gpu btw).

It's GPU coil whine, it's not OS specific.

Re: Ubuntu 9.04 - whine when *not* under load...

In addition to graphics cards, motherboards and PSUs can also whine.

As for why it's not ocurring under Vista, (assuming it's your motherboard) perhaps it's due to CnQ or EIST and you've got Vista set to the High Performance power plan, which prevents the CPU from clocking down from full speed. In think that in the majority of cases, whine occurs when the particular device isn't being stressed (e.g. monitors tend to hum when brightness is turned down rather than when run at 100%, graphics cards whine when idle rather than when playing games etc.).

Simply because the GPU accelerated windows display is different in Ubuntu than in Windows - most notably linux doesn't always call the idle power speeds correctly, so the GPU is probably going full whack just displaying a relatively simple desktop, hence the whine.
