    NAS Software and disk failure

    Hi All,
I'm currently running a version of OpenFiler. It's great, but it doesn't provide any information on disk problems. I'm planning on building out a new NAS box with 4 or 5 1.5TB disks in there. It's going to host backups of photos etc (which will be mirrored offsite using Amazon S3), but also all my DVD rips/lossless musics, which are too big to backup.

I know RAID is not a substitute for backup, but I'm happy having all this stuff in a RAID-5 array which will report when a disk fails.

Can anyone recommend anything which will notify me when disks start to fail? Windows Home Server? FreeNAS? Anything else?

    Cheers...

    Add
    Code:
    MAILADDR youremail@address.com
    to /etc/mdadm.conf.

Re: NAS Software and disk failure

So when the array degrades, that'll alert me? Prior to having this, I had a hardware NAS box which would alert when the disks started to fail - presumably using SMART etc. I want to be in the position where if a disk fails I'm alerted, can swap out a disk, and am good to go again.

Also, using mdadm, will this give me the SATA channel number which has failed? I really don't want a double disk failure in a RAID-5 array......

Assuming the mdadm service is running, yes.

Yeah, smartmontools can tell you when a disk is getting in bad shape too.

It'll tell you the node which died, say /dev/sda2, from that you can extrapoliate the SATA channel it's on. 'sda' is usually channel 0, 'sdb' channel 1, and so forth.
