Windows 7 RC "Installation was not successful"

Just built a new PC specifically to use for evaluating Windows 7. Problem was, the install failed about two thirds of the way through, shortly after rebooting and starting services. I tried installing on a clean machine and also over Vista - still no luck - and no useful error messages either!

After some internet research, I tried unplugging the DVI lead from the on-board Nvidea 7100 graphics port and connecting the monitor via a VGA lead instead.

This time, the install worked perfectly - and going on to 'Windows Update' after the installation was complete, almost the first thing it downloaded was new graphics drivers...

(It now works fine with the DVI connector reattached)

Hope this is some help to anyone with a similar problem. I now like Windows 7!

Interesting. I wonder if this issue is related to 7 series graphics cards or just your particular build?

I have had no troubles with Windows 7 on the following GPUs:

nV 8600GT M, ATi 4850, nV GTX 295

Well, the computer used this motherboard :

- which has integrated NVIDIA GeForce 7100 graphics and the nForce 630i chipset. I chose it because it was the cheapest board I could find with integrated graphics with a DVI connector.

Strange issue; I personally had no issues of that kind when clean installing Win7 RC x64 with my 8800GT and my DVI connection. *shrugs* I'll keep that workaround in mind, though, in case I or anyone I know comes across that issue.

Update - this problem has been fixed in the RTM version of Windows 7.

My first install failed - it just gave up during install and again got the "Installation not successful" on many attempts. In the end I had to reinstall XP just to download another ISO of the install disk (which eventually all worked).
