Need Help with Media Centre! Decoder Error...

Ok, so I bought a new board yesterday for my HTPC and installed it. The board is the Asus M3N78-EM.

    http://uk.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID...LWp&templete=2

I installed Win 7 beta with the latest nvidia driver package for Win 7 and went to setup media centre. It finds all the channels fine, but when I click to view one I get a decoder error!

If I try to play a recorded program it gives the same error. If I play a recorded program in Windows Media Player I only get sound!!

I’ve installed Win 7 twice now with no codec packs and it just won’t have it. Any ideas?

Cheers, I'll try that later. Its a very strange issue because my previous installed (with same hardware except mobo) worked absolutely fine! I could be heading back to Vista at this rate, which I really dont want to do

    Any other suggestions out there??

W7 RC isn't really ready for HTPC use IMHO - there are plenty of known problems with that build (it BSODs on install on my machine because of a driver/HAL bug that MS fixed later on). Not want you want to hear, but it is the truth nonetheless. So you either workaround the RC bugs for now, or wait for the RTM to hit the streets and go with that.

I can't help with the original problem but I'll just say that I've been running my new HTPC on the W7 RC for about a month now without much trouble at all.

I hear what you're saying, it is beta afterall. Just annoying that it worked fine until I changed boards! RTM isnt too far away, so back to Vista it is!

It also means I have to install the TV Pack for Vista otherwise I won't be able to view my .wtv recordings from Win 7 without converting them all...

umm.... would it not help to install some codecs?

Edit: I'm just saying that trying to play things back without codecs, as you seem to be doing ("I’ve installed Win 7 twice now with no codec packs") seems to be like making a cheese sandwich, saying "yeah, I'm really looking forward to this cheese sandwich, this cheese sandwich is gonna be awesome". And then realising that you've not got any cheese.

Edit number 2: Clearly, you're relying on the pre-installed Codecs. have you run G-Spot or other codec identifier to see what codecs are needed?

Edit 3: I feel compelled to continue the cheese analogy. Strictly, I could have used ham, I suppose, or corned beef, but let's stick with what we know: running some kind of codec identifier like the aforementioned G-spot would be like having Alex James from Blur (and now cheesemaker) come to your house and tell you exactly what kind of cheese would be best for your sandwich.

You shouldnt need to install any codecs and Win 7 makes it very hard to change the default media centre TV codec. I've used a codec checker tool and it shows that I'm using the MS one as I should be.

I've also tried ffdshow codecs and a few others, but still get the decoder error message. Looks like I'm stuck with VMC until Win 7 RTM is out!

Well, I'm stumped then. Admittedly, I'm on Vista, but it won't play any of my avis until I put some decent codecs on it, and then Media Centre has no problem with them at all.

Well, I installed Vista last night and it worked right away!! Obviously, Win 7 has an issue with my setup so I'll wait for the general release
