Problems with Virtualdub, rotation and compression

I have taken some videos on my digi camera in portrait so need to rotate them 90degrees. I have spent the last few hours trying to find out how to do this on the internet - who knew it would be so complicated!!!!!

The videos are AVI files which I want to eventually upload onto youtube for relatives to see.

I have managed to use the rotate filter in virtual dub, however saving this file results in a 2gb file from an original of 100mb.

Further research reveals this is because I need to recompress the video..

I have installed divx and xvid but get error messages when I try and use either. I really have no idea what im doing at all!!

I will put some screen shots below once I have done 5 posts as system will not let me before! if anyone could point me in the right direction please help!!!!

I am so frustrated, ive spent hours on this now and really dont have a clue!!!

Re: Problems with Virtualdub, rotation and compression

Welcome to Hexus. I usually use something like Adobe Premiere (Elements) or After Effects to rotate videos. No idea how to do it with free software though.

Also there's a new version of VirtualDub. Check their website.

I believe with XVID you need to use even numbers - so in this case with width of 479 could be changed to 480.
