    What the heck just happened?

I've just been browsing the net and watching a few youtube videos and for some reason, as soon as the system clock hit 00:00, aero switched to low performance mode, you know when transparency turns off and the close/minimize/resize buttons go smaller etc? Restarting helped but why on earth did that happen? Windows 7 and CCC are likely culprits.

After a quick check in the event viewer I found this: "A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Windows System Assessment Tool)" and this "The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application' followed by this at next logon: "The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0x40010004)". Strange...

Something else to add: I tried to replicate it by setting the clock back to 23:59:45 and waited for it to change but nothing happened.

Really hate to bump an old topic. But this happened to me a few nights ago (nstead of 00:00 it was 02:00am that triggered it for me). REALLY had me stumped. No idea what caused it. Specs in sig. I had a good dig around and nothing seemed out of place.

I couldn't re-enable aero by changing the themes or anything. In the end I got Aero back by going to control panel, and search for "Aero" and then "detect and repair any problems" wizard. Worked a treat. Turns out something decided that I didn't need/want the DWM service any more.

    Very weird!

I completely forgot about this thread, I think I mentioned it elsewhere on this forum and somebody said it's probably that Windows Experience score updating and when I updated it myself it stopped happening. It happened again more recently (at 1am) and I checked task manager and sure enough Winsat.exe was in the process list so I killed it and everything went back to normal. Every time you update video drivers for example the score 'needs to be refreshed because new hardware was detected' or something so it keeps trying to do it until it completes.
Solution: Either run WinSAT every time you update drivers or do the following:
Go to Task Scheduler and in the left pane go Microsoft>Windows>Maintenence and right click then disable WinSAT.

Yeah I remember that thread too, I think I even posted in it. I did search for it, just couldn't find it.

Yeah that was it, I couldn't find this thread to bump it IIRC which is why I made that other one.
