Ubuntu Install - For a newb on XP

I'd like to install Ubuntu. Easy right?

Well what I want to do is install it on my current HDD. This has a partition, so I have my winXP OS partition and a partition for everything else.

How do I go about installing Ubuntu without having to reformat the drive, creating another partition and installing ubuntu and winxp?

What I'd like is to be able to dual boot. Is it possible to just install Ubuntu without creating it's own partition?

    Hope my query makes sense...

It needs it's own partition, but you can simplify the install massively by using Wubi to install from within Windows. If you decide you don't want it any more simply uninstall using add/remove programs.

Runs from Windows, downloads Ubuntu for you, installs it without repartitioning, and allows dual boot.

Wubi installs a big file with a virtual partition inside, and it boots the OS from inside that file. Sounds zany, but really. So it certainly should install onto any drive (no promises that the installer does as it's told though)

Re: Ubuntu Install - For a newb on XP

Yay! I got Ubuntu installed within windows on the 1TB drive but i can't seem to access my media files which are also on this very same drive.

ie I can't seem to find/see S:\music.mp3 or S:\video.mpg etc. Is this because ubuntu is in S:\ubuntu?

BTW it's quite a smooth transition to Ubuntu, very intuitive after being a windows whore for many many years! I like it so far and gonna stick it on my laptop too! But will I have the same problems, ie because my media is in C:\music or C:\videos would I not see it because ubuntu is installed in C:\ubuntu?

Re: Ubuntu Install - For a newb on XP

Ubuntu (Linux) doesn't use drive letters (mainly because you're limited to the size of the alphabet (which is arguably enough)).

If your partition for music etc isn't showing up, it might be because Ubuntu hasn't mounted it. Make sure you've updated all your packages and if it still doesn't work, it might be a command line job with the direct editing of /etc/fstab.

Join the IRC channel for Ubuntu on irc.freenode.org (install Xchat or irssi on ubuntu) and join channel #ubuntu - they should be able to walk you through it.

Re: Ubuntu Install - For a newb on XP

Yeah you should be able to access other partitions (including C:) from a Wubi Ubuntu install - click places and towards the bottom you should see something like 50GB media, 70GB media as an example - these are your partitions but they will not have drive letters like in Windows but will keep labels. When you click on one it will be mounted and you should be asked to enter your password. When the drive is mounted it's added to the desktop.

I think there's a folder called "host" somewhere on a wubi install that gets you onto the drive on which wubi is installed to.

Re: Ubuntu Install - For a newb on XP

That Wubi was a complete disaster when I tried to use it with Ubuntu 7, had to do it the manual way. I only stuck with Ubuntu for a few days though, there was too much to learn and the Linux crowd were by and large unhelpful and rude.

At least the Wubi process has improved now though (by the sounds of it), it should make it a heck of a lot easier for people to give linux a crack.

Re: Ubuntu Install - For a newb on XP

Thanks Steve, just what I needed.

Snootyjim: I have no issues (at the moment) with ubuntu and it seems easy enough for a pleb like me. So I guess you're a power user? What I like about ubuntu so far is how easy it is to just install and be up and running in less time than it takes to install drivers under windows. The whole two workspace thing is pretty nifty too. I would suggest to try wubi again and giving linux a good old bash again. Change is nice

Naw, Linux is even easier for the power user. BTW, if you right click on the workspace applet, you can add more of them in the properties menu. Quite useful.

Re: Ubuntu Install - For a newb on XP

OK, I've got Ubuntu on my laptop, and updated it all. So far so good until I try and load up a video click full screen. The audio continues but video does not and input commands do not work. I've waited a good while (infact almost listened to the entire show) but it doesn't recover. It's a shame that so far Ubuntu is not behaving so well on the laptop. I also tried rotating the screen so I could see if I could read images like a book...ubuntu crashed.

Does all this sound like ATi driver issues on linux or is there something missing that I need to install Ubuntu onto a Dell Studio 15 laptop?

Video problems and rotation problems definitely sounds graphics driver related

Are you using the proprietary driver or the Free one? System/Administration/Hardware Drivers

Re: Ubuntu Install - For a newb on XP

Yes, it's an driver problem. Your graphics chip isn't supported by the opensource drivers and the stock propitiatory drivers don't work properly at all, and I doubt your GPU chip is supported by the latest AMD driver yet. So you're pretty much stuck with the vesa software video driver for now.
