Re: Ideas for customizing the OS with SSD please ?

Yeah I suppose it depends on a few things. Just when I checked what the service was accessing it was caching some isos I downloaded some time ago and have used perhaps once or twice which didn't make much sense. Also I shut down my computer overnight so it has to start again when it boots. I suppose I could give it another shot some time...

Egads, what a waste of potential!
Hybrid sleep mode is one of the best things Vista brought with it - under 2 seconds to get back to the desktop, no waiting for services to start up, and the system cache is already populated... which is what Superfetch does.
If you sleep & resume, the disk access by Superfetch will be a LOT less.

    Oh, so true.

When friends, family and people I know ask me about windows "tweaking" guides I generally always reply with the same: If you're asking for settings to tweak, it's almost certain they don't need tweaking.
I don't think it could be any more true with Windows 7 either.

Yes I do think you need to take what you read with a pinch of salt and exercise common sense, as is the case with all internet articles and forum posts, however i think you over exaggerate slightly with the above statement

Re: Ideas for customizing the OS with SSD please ?

So far for me Windows 7RC has been faster than XP was when it was in the same state, on the same system, so for the moment I'm not really going to bother with any tweaking - I'll save that for when I have an issue.

I remember one of the tweaks for XP was to set it to the classic desktop mode and not use a wallpaper in order to save memory. When I tried that the saving was insignificant and swallowed up in the day to day variations in memory usage, yet for a long time most benchmark screenshots out there had the classic theme, and no wallpaper...

So has TRIM actually been implemented? The last I'd read was that it was still in development, hence why I'm having to use Wiper.
Wiper.exe, or PRT by the various manufactures, is a beta released from Indilinx. You can use it with AHCI as long as you use the Microsoft native drivers, once you use Intel iastor.sys it crawls. TRIM is part of W7, Indilinx is supposed to implement it shortly.

As for tweaking I wouldn't disable most of those from the OP, still if you really like tweaking have a look at this thread http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=49779

Re: Ideas for customizing the OS with SSD please ?

Hi,I just wanted to share two things about Windows 7 I found out only just now.
I know that customizations are something very individual hence why some may like it (as me) and some don't.

For example Aero Snap. It has been hailed as something great but I rather have it switched off.
Just found out how to do it and have discovered a nice little feature of how to activate a window by just hovering with the mouse pointer over it .. instead of clicking.

    • Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse and
Prevent windows from being automatically arranged when moved to the edge of the screen (Aero Snap)

Start › change how your mouse works › tick boxes › ok
