    Re: Do you defrag?

I never defrag. i manually turned the default vista defragger off because when it started, it took up quite a bit of resources and I had to stop what I was doing. (Yes, I know it only starts when the PC is idle, but once it starts, if you try to use the PC, the defragger spends MINUTES trying to pause itself -- all while continuing to use the disk, RAM, and CPU).

i did not notice any performance loss the whole year when my defragger was off.

I am using win7 RC1 right now, I guess the default defragger is still on b/c i didn't turn it off. So far I have not noticed it, which is the only reason why it's still enabled.

i really dont care about defragging. If the system ever gets bogged down or slow and i think its because of fragmentation, then i'll defrag. Else, i'll just let it be.

    Re: Do you defrag?

I set the defrag utility in Vista on the works PC to defrag every Wednesday at lunch time.

Seems to do a pretty damn good job to be honest. I use/copy/delete numerous large files (1-3Gb) every day, and the PC never seems to slow down.

    Worthwhile doing in my opinion.

    Re: Do you defrag?

Another Mydefrag user here... I do a 'fast update' on mine every couple of days with a 'slow optimize' about once a month. I move a pile of large audio files about though, and install/uninstall a lot of games on my system partition aswell.

I never bother defragging. Last time I tried it on an older PC it took ages and made barely any difference.

I use the built-in defragger and run it approx monthly. What about adding a poll to this thread?

    Re: Do you defrag?

I just let Windows 7's scheduled defragger get on with its job. I think it does it wel enough.

For non-7 computers (usually belonging to friends who don't defrag for 3 years and wonder why their computer has slowed down) I use JkDefrag, or MyDefrag as it's now called.

    Re: Do you defrag?

using the one comes with win7 rc, works very well. I dont think you need 3rd party one if you run win7.

    Re: Do you defrag?

After doing a bit of analysis - I definitely like the W7 defragger - it does seem to be doing the job well when analysing with a third party tool to verify it. Well, one less thing to buy then
