    Do you defrag?

    DO you defrag your drives?

    Regularly?

    What do you use?

    I admit I do have a schedule for this, weekly & before the backup runs using Diskeeper. Am I alone in this? I also run http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/ on the lappy's that aren't running Linux/BSD.

    Re: Do you defrag?

    Maybe quarterly for me and I use the inbuilt Windows defrag tool, but judging by the question I am now presuming there are some much better tools out there?

    Re: Do you defrag?

    I fail horribly in my duty to defrag both my own, and my work's, computers - mainly because I've only used the Windows Defrag tool and that tends to takeover the PC so needs doing during "downtime", as it were. I assume things like Diskeeper and Defraggler have advantages over the Windows defrag then...?

    Re: Do you defrag?

    I used to use UltimateDefrag to do mine but then that died a death when they messed up the 64 bit support.

    I then moved to Defraggler which did the job until I got the new 1TB drive and it never seemed to do anything. An hour later for all 6 partitions and it looks exactly the same as when I started. I found a deal at the time for O&O Defrag for a third of the price so I bought that. This one actually seems to do the job

    Re: Do you defrag?

    Linux shop here, so no defragging, except my xfs partition on my media center PC, which I believe gets defragged by a cronjob (I let Mythbuntu do it for me).
    PHP Code:
    $s = new signature();
    $s->sarcasm()->intellect()->font('Courier New')->display();

    Re: Do you defrag?

    I tend to defreg on a semi-regular basis, probably about once a fortnight, depending on what I have done. I too use diskeeper.

    And to answer other people's questions, yes things like diskeeper are much better than the built in defrag tool. For a start it will run happily around other programs, whereas the built in one tends to get interrupted all the time and restarts from the beginning. They will also monitor and defrag the MFT, including recommending when to enlarge it to stop poor performance.

    Re: Do you defrag?

    Not really no. Recently remembered that I should defrag, so dug out an old copy of O&O Defrag, ran it and I've noticed no difference. I guess Vista defrag's in the background somewhere.

    Once in a while , and even if some people told me that is useless , after defragmentaion the game seems to load a bit faster

    Re: Do you defrag?

    when i was setting up my computer, installing games here and moving files around all the time, i defragged once or twice a day using UltimateDefrag. the worst i had was around 55% fragmented.

    now that everythings installed, I havent had to defrag the drives for a month. i'm quite happy with 0.06% fragmentation on the games drive. 0.2% on the storage drive. and 3% on windows - its the system restore/ghost files doing that.

    Just as an aside, does anyone know if the inbuilt Win7 defrag is any better than that in XP & Vista?
