    Question Technet & MSDN subscriptions

What, apart from the price, is the difference between the two?

    Re: Technet & MSDN subscriptions

TechNet is for the IT Professional, where as MSDN is aimed more towards to the developers. So for example, you don't get Visual Studio on TechNet, but you do on MSDN.

What is the difference between a TechNet Plus subscription and an MSDN subscription?
TechNet Plus is designed for hands-on IT professionals who evaluate, implement, maintain, deploy and support Microsoft solutions. The Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) subscription is designed for developers who create and test applications built on Microsoft technologies. While there is some content overlap, each subscription contains information and resources that are specific to its audience.

Also, IIRC, the Technet licence specifically excludes using products in a development environment.

...and only for testing, not in live environments (in other words not so you can give copies to your friends and family).

I was rather under the impression that this limitation also applied to MSDN, though I'd have to go and look that up...

EDIT - http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/subs.../cc150618.aspx makes it somewhat more clear. As mud.

According to MS, you can ..... this is fairly clear, I think.

About three items from the bottom ... "Use Microsoft software for designing and developing your applications." Technet = No, MSDN = Yes.

Having said that, I'm not an MSDN user so I could be reading that wrong.

    Re: Technet & MSDN subscriptions

MSDN is aimed at people like me - developers (Microsoft Developer Network). I've managed my subs for work for years here.

Same rules apply to both though - one site, one person, and not for live PCs.

Technet doesn't give you access to the development tools, so there's no danger of that

People could always get the development tools in other ways .... such as buying them.

I htink what MS mean is that if you are setting up a system, perhaps with different machines with different OSs, or for development with Office, that the Technet licence doesn't cover you for that so isn't appropriate. That's what I meant by not using Technet for a development platform.

    Re: Technet & MSDN subscriptions

If your doing computer science at most UK universities, you have access to the ELMS/MSDN:AA (MSDN Academic Alliance) - you can get most Microsoft software (ie Win 7 Pro, Office, Vis Studio, etc) from it for free
