Powerpoint 95 to 97-2000 or above converter?

The company has just moved to office 2007, in doing so we have realised we are now unable to open legacy (read 'archived') powerpoint files that were saved in powerpoint 95. A huge oversight granted. Unfortunately we do have quite a few of these files, which some users need for reference.

Powerpoint 2000 converts these files automatically, and powerpoint 2007 can open these converted files. Unfortuntaley very few people here have access to PP2000. So what we need is a standalone batch converter. I have searched the web, i have found one that does 97 - 2003, but not one that will convert 95 to a newer format.

Does anyone know if such a utility exists?

You can't. Certainly not with any free or reliable software. The best way to do this is via VM. Get your favourite VM program (VirtualBox rocks), install XP, install Powepoint 2000 or 2003. And then follow these instructions, for mass conversion.

    Good luck mate.

Just thought wouldn't the older 'powerpoint viewers' work?

it can be done in 2003 with a macro, then you can open them in 2007. Thats Microsoft for you.

I'm sorry but you can't expect Microsoft to support an anicent version of their software. I mean how old is it now? Time to move forward.

I don't really agree, a simple converter would have been very simple for them to add to 2007. A PDF made in 95 would still open today so why not a Power Point?

Because the PDF format was finalised very early on, and the revisions that have been made since have been trivial. The formats the Microsoft made for their documents on the otherhand are a complete mess, and what is worse, due to their anti-competive behaviour at the time, there would be no documentation of the changes between versions of the documents. So much so that in some cases it's a wonder that you could open a previous version at all. It has not been until recently, with Office Open XML, that they have finally agreed upon a standard.

Of course considering how over-complicated the standard is, and the fact they finalised it after the release of Office 2007, there is still some problems. But they are getting better at cooperative behaviour.

Don't get me wrong, Microsoft are a great company, but in some respects they have failed the people, and abused their position. The browser wars of the late nineties with Netscape and Internet Explorer being the classic example...

However, if they continue to improve performance, like they have in recent years, with open standards, better support for alternatives, and finally, releasing good products, then things will get much better. For the moment, however, you're stuck with a copy of XP on VirtualBox with Office 2000 or 2003 installed, with a batch macro to bulk convert everything.

I wish you luck on this task, and if you require any assitance with the Macro (assmuning you can't find a suitable one online) I will of course be happy to provide this.
