    IP35-E and Windows 7

Hello all. I've always had a problem with installing any Vista release and it was no surprise to me that Windows 7 would act up just as Windows Vista since it's basically the same installer...

I ALWAYS get stuck on "Completing installation...", the dots are moving, mouse and keyboard works...

I don't know what causes this problem, I've browsed around and found out that having more than 2gb of ram could cause this, so I removed all memory sticks but one so I have 1gb of total ram... still wont work... Same problem! Looping on that stupid "Completing installation..."!

I thought, maybe I need better RAID drivers but after googling even more on that, I realize my motherboard doesn't support RAID?

Anyone have had any problems installing Vista or 7 with this motherboard (IP35-E, not IP35 or IP35 PRO!)?

Anyone else had the same problem?

I'm in desperate need of help

When you say "stuck", how long did you wait? I've noticed the Win7 (and Vista now I come to think of it) installer sometimes seems to do nothing for a *long* time... once I was just on the point of hitting the reset button when it kicked into life and completed without problems.

Win7 RC1 x64 on an Abit IP-35 Pro here, by the way.

The only thing i can maybe think of is have you made sure the disk isn't dirty or was written wrongly to (i assume your using Win 7 RC) . You could just burn another one.

I also noticed that you said that everything still works.

How long have you left it for as it could just be taking it's time. Perhaps leave it over night?

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

I know for a fact that it's not a disc error because the same disc works just fine on my laptop and it returned no errors while burning and CRC checks ends up fine.

My DVD-ROM can read the DVD just fine and it's no dusty lens or scratched DVD.

I know that many people have had this problem with Vista and later and the errors have been:

More than 2 GB memory installed.
    Incompatible RAID drivers.
Wrong SATA BIOS settings (AHCI etc. note: there is no such option on my motherboard)
Raptor hard drive (which I am actually trying to install too)
Some Nvidia graphic cards (8800 series is one of them which I have too).

The error could be anywhere really! I blame Microsoft for this incompatibility, XP and earlier works just fine, why wouldn't Vista and later?

What happens when I get to "Completing installation" is that my hard drive loads a lot for a while, maybe 30 sec (wow it's actually installing!). Then it's a complete stop, my hard drive is silent.
I've had the install up and running over an hour, then I turned my computer off for hardware changes. "Completing installation" shouldn't take more than 5 minutes as far as I know, it should shortly reboot and then carry on with the installation and configuration (date, time, pc name, account names etc.) but I never get there.

This is a very annoying issue .

I want to try unplugging the raptor hard drive and install on another hard drive but I have no available hard drives (with free disk space).

I have also tried unplugging all drives, removed everything unnecessary (USB devices such as mouse etc.).

    Any ideas?

Thank you for for taking your time.

EDIT: I've noticed people with my motherboard is running it just fine in Windows 7 so it can't be a compatibility issue there. I don't have the latest BIOS version (one version from it actually) but I doubt it'll solve my issue :/

EDIT2: I just wanted to add that I've tried 5 different builds of Windows Vista both x86 and x64 1 year ago.

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

You need to give it at least an hour. Seriously just leave it to do its thing and come back in the morning.

My first install hung at that point for at least 25 minutes.

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

I gave it another shot and something actually happened. It rebooted after a while - the hard way. So I get a Windows 7 boot menu where I can select two Windows 7 installations and when I select any of them it loads Windows 7 and then it complains:

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

    -_-

I'm actually going to try and upgrade my BIOS to the latest version, I just need to find a boot disk which I can burn onto a DVD disc together with the flash files - I don't have any CD discs.

    Hmpf...

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

I have now updated to the latest BIOS version for my motherboard.
I am now on "Completing Installation..." and I was surprised how my monitor suddenly flickered and changed it's resolution to something higher (it never came that far before).
The hard drive has now stopped working again, doesn't look so promising anymore *sigh*...
I have to jump to bed so I'll leave this crap going through the night, hopefully a BIOS update was the solution but the sudden silence from the hard drive makes me expect the worse..............

Good night, I'll post the results tomorrow morning

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

Well surprise surprise! It didn't work. Now it complained right at the boot manager this time....

I'm getting really tired of this and it did not help that I actually dreamt that I got it working

    My specs are:

    PSU: Corsair Powersupply 520W
    MB: Abit IP35-E iP35 4DDR2-DIMM 3PCI 3PCIe SATA Raid Audio GB-LAN Socket775 ATX
    CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz 4MB FSB1333 Boxed (with cpu-cooler!) Socket 775
    GFX: BFG GeForce 8800GTS OC2 580MHz GPU 640MB DDR3 TV-out HDTV DUAL DVI SLI-ready RETAIL PCI Express
    RAM: 2x OCZ Titanium XTC 2GB Kit (2x1024MB) DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz EPP-ready
SFX: Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer – Fatal1ty Professional Retail
    HDD: Western Digital Raptor WD740GD 74Gb 10000rpm 8Mb cache S-ATA

If I had spare hardware I could have done more thorough testing, damnit... I'm going to upgrade my PC one sunny day, replacing mb, cpu, ram and gfx but I might still get the same error by still using some of the other older hardware :/.
I removed the soundcard last night too, it was in the way for my CMOS battery .

Why can't Microsoft have some sort of debug mode on the installer, would have helped so much identifying where it goes wrong!!!

I was about to suggest use another HDD to test but you don't have another one so i don't really know what else to say.

See what some of the other guys say

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

Okay so I'm thinking it's probably hard drive related. Couple of possibilities:

Swap the connector to a different port - there are reports of IRQ conflicts.

Can you use a boot disk to make sure the hard drive's MBR is wiped clean and the disk is unpartitioned.

If that doesn't work, try creating a single NTFS partition over the whole drive and setting it active.

    None hard drive options:
    Update to latest BIOS
Disable power management controls in BIOS.
Use a PS2 keyboard/mouse to remove USB conflicts - disable as many USB options in BIOS as needed as well.

Once you've got Windows 7 installed you should be free to revert back.

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

    Hello.

I'll try swapping the connectors, just going to try these "jmicron raid drivers" first, then I'm into the switch.

I guess I could use the MBR tools on the Windows disc, right?

And oh, I'll disable anything that is related to USB.

    Thanks!

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

I would simplify the system as much as possible pre-install:
    - remove the sound card
    - remove all USB connected devices except mouse & keyboard
    - connect a single HDD to a disk controller port that is not enabled for AHCI or RAID
    - remove all but 1 DIMM

If you've already got the latest BIOS on the motherboard (you did do a reset back to default and re-enter the settings, right?), it might be worth checking for SATA controller drivers from the manufacturer's website and offer those (on a USB stick) during setup.

Out of habit I tend to disable all the unused ports in the BIOS, such as firewire, parallel, etc., disable things like PXE boot and sometimes even the disk channels I know nothing is connected to.
Some older systems I had encountered problems if the SATA disk I/O mode was AHCI, and would only work correctly with "IDE mode".

Hint: one you've gone past the "Install Now" button on the setup screen, you can hit Shift-F10 to open a command prompt - this can be handy for using diskpart to configure the partitions before reaching the selection screen.

It does - as far as it can it'll report error codes or even BSOD. However if you've got hardware problems there's little it can do in all honesty.

    Re: IP35-E and Windows 7

Hello and thank you for your replies.

I have removed everything but the necessary, so I only have one harddrive connected to SATA2 this time, disabled USB, sound and NIC in BIOS.
When I upgraded BIOS I reset the settings by removing the CMOS battery.
And of course, I only run with one DIMM.

And as far as I know my motherboard does not support RAID even though it said so when I bought it . There are no RAID options and there is sure as hell no AHCI option I can turn on or off in my BIOS, I think they run on IDE automatically but I can not be 100% sure, still, I see no AHCI wherever I look .
I know some people have had problems with AHCI and I had hoped I had this feature but meh...

Well, honestly, I have tried everything I can think of and I have googled around and there are a lot of people with the same install issue. Though people seem to have fixed it differently than any other.

I don't think this is a motherboard problem, maybe an AHCI problem but then there's nothing I can do I'm afraid. So I'll go and nag about this problem on microsoft's forum and leave you guys alone, thank you for your effort in trying to help me though, I really appreciate it!
