    Windows Partition Decided to Die?

    Yo,

My Vista partition decided to die on my hard drive and I dont know why.

During boot up, it said something like needs to checkdsk or something started checking indexes and stuff in a 3 part disk checking thing. 2 out of 3 partitions were fine (games and data) but the OS partition it didnt like and start replacing security bits or something. After it did all that (like 1 hour and a bit) It wont boot properly, it manages to get past the "running green loading bar" thing but it stop dead after that, leaving only a plain black screen with a working mouse cursor.

When I try to access the partition itself from Win 7 on my SSD I get this:

Ive checked Diskmanagement and it says it is healthy and active....

Im not too worried about the OS itself, but there was some stuff I might need that I forgot to back up

You could try Photorec/Testdisk, both of which are available on the System Rescue CD http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page
Photorec recovers files and Testdisk attempts to make the partition usable again. You could try Testdisk first but, as with all data recovery, it can make things worse. If it succeeds back up whatever you can ASAP and check SMART data etc to see if the drive is OK. Also both of these programs are available as applications if you have a working OS - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

You might be lucky in that it's just the security descriptors that are knackered. Go to the properties of the drive, then the Security tab. If you can't see permissions, then it may just be this.. Go to Advanced > Owner and make yourself the current owner. You should then be able to either see or reset the permissions, so close properties, reopen and go back to the Security tab. If there's nothing, add Administrators and give them full control. OK everything and see if you can get into it now?
