A way to send files directly?

I basically want PC to PC file sending, since the new msn breaks sharing folders and not everyone has kept the old one..
I usually have lot of photos or videos I want to send to people without uploading them anywhere so I'm looking for a way to do that.

    Requirements:
-program based (not using a browser)
    -free
    -resume support

-ability to control speed would be a bonus

Re: A way to send files directly?

I use windows live mesh, it allows me to share folders across lots of my own computers, and also with other people. Think the current limit is 5 gig

I like it due to simplicity and speed of etup, even my wife uses it.

Re: A way to send files directly?

If the files are small ish (under a Megabyte), then most instant messaging systems support sending files to people. You just open a chat session with them and offer them the file. They have to accept, and then it goes.

For very big files, you could use bit-torrent, as that is inherently robust and resumable. I used Vuze (formerly Azerueus) to send large files around my home WiFi network, and it was much robust than windows file sharing or ftp. With Vuze it is very quick and easy to create a torrent file, and share it privately with somone else.

If you are sharing with many other people, then again either Bittorent, or as Flibb says, upload the files to private sharing service.

Re: A way to send files directly?

What I needed was for using over the internet with other people, I was trying to avoid setting up the whole ftp server thing..

Mesh seems to have sorted out my problem for now.. the whole email invite thing to a folder seems a bit weird and counter-intuitive though.

oh and for the internal network, I just chuck it over msn if I can't be bothered to use shared folders as it transfers the files internally anyways.

Re: A way to send files directly?

    You could try Dropbox.

You can simply set up a shared folder between accounts and then all you need to do is drag and drop the files into the folder and it sorts out the rest.

As an added bonus it even has 30 days revision history to revert back to.

I use it all the time and it's an excellent piece of software. You can also control the speed of transfers as well as resume whenever you want.

I think we may have different definitions of 'very big' I am using bittorent to move video files with an average size of 3Gb, many are bigger than 6Gb. Whatever transport protocol is used that will take at least an hour to move over an 802.11g network.

On my home WiFi the network drops out for a second or so every few minutes, presumably due to interference from next door's baby monitor or suchlike. It is no problem with web browsing or suchlike, but for uploading large files to a server, it makes it impossible. As bittorent is designed for unreliable networks it transfers the files reliably, and at close to the maximum theoretical speed.

i move around tons off high def films, they are 4.7gig in size each and i got a shared folder which is total off 60 gig off random films.

but i got a wired network going round so its on for me, but i guess with your wireless yes it woud be a pain

You might as well use FTP in that case, saving the need to hash the file and find a usable tracker, and most important it is private (unless you set it otherwise). And the other end can multi-thread if necessary.

Re: A way to send files directly?

IMO ftp is your best choice. With ftp you have total control on who access who. If BW is an issue, then go to rapidshare/mediafire/and so on...
