What's the best way to record streaming videos ?

    Hi,

I really want to make this work without using Firefox - I use I.E. 8.0 and Windows 7.

Tried HiDownload 7.30 but when going to "Add" / "Streams" / and trying to select the option "Flash Video Streaming", the following error comes up:

What can I do please ... or ... would you know a different working solution ??

    Thanks !

Why not jsut use Firefox and i dont think i fully understand what you mean. Do you want to downlaod stuff off YouTube etc, if so there are bucket loads of prgrams that will do it regardless of your web browser - but if you use Firefox then you can do it from the browser with a plug-in.

Re: What's the best way to record streaming videos ?

Hi, I trying to avoid installing a second browser like Firefox.

No, to capture YouTube video is simple.
But it seems to be a real challenge to record streaming Flash videos.

Haven't found a working solution yet.

Arent Youtube videos flash? Also whats wrong with installing a second and arguably better browser than your using now? There are stand alone prgrams available wich will let you copy the URL intot hema nd they will download them inot a .FLV file which can then be played aslong as you have the right video codecs.

Re: What's the best way to record streaming videos ?

Alright, the software is called WM Capture

The usage can't be more simple:

    1. Clicking on Settings, you can setup

    • Audio bit-rate
    • Video bit-rate
    • Frames per second
    • Video format
    • Video acceleration on/off
    • Setting a limit for recording size & time
    • Set output folder
    • etc etc

    2. before you start recording, you first define an area that will be recorded

    • either by clicking on Get Window, that will put a frame around an i.e. embedded player
    • or by clicking on Show Markers, where you can resize the frame around whatever you wanna record

    3. Then you simply click record on WM Capture and play the video clip / start the streaming.

    • You can pause and continue at anytime.
    • While recording, it shows you exact info about time and size of the recording in process.
    • When the videoclip / streaming is finished, click stop.
    • The recording is located at the predefined location and can be seen by clicking on View.

    Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Please note, that the Demo allows you to record up to 2 minutes only.
Once it has been unlocked, there're no limitations unless defined by yourself in Settings.
Further I noticed that it really does record anything and everything ...
meaning, if you open a new window while recording, or hoover with your mouse over the video - it records all that ... you really get what you see !

Well, I think I deserve a thank you now .

Re: What's the best way to record streaming videos ?

So it doesn't actually record the stream, but records what's on your screen and dumps that?

That's a *very* bad way to do it. You get all sorts of funky issues with that kind of approach on certain footage.

Don't know what you have against fiery ferret. You're installing all these extra programs when FF can do this easy with one of many plugins. Not only that but there are stand alone installs of FF so it can be run from a pendrive / directory without touching your system.

You do seem to have made this a lot more difficult than it needs to be

Re: What's the best way to record streaming videos ?

As already mentioned get Firefox and Downloadhelper plug-in, would be better in the long run as installing various applications will only leave a trail of files and registry entries on your PC.

If you're using IE now it would be worth your time getting FF anyway.

Re: What's the best way to record streaming videos ?

Agent, what kind of (very bad) issues do you mean ? I have tried it a few times and it worked flawless.

What would be the advantage to record the actual stream instead ?
What might be the difference in storage space of captured video clips doing it this or the other way ?

I know it all depends on Bitrate, FPS, resolution, etc, etc but a 9:05 minutes video stream cost me 208.528 kB.

Hmm, pondering of giving FF a try. Is it really that easy to save "video streaming" on HDD ?
I ask because I had to go through tons of info before I found above solution to work.

The most obvious one is capture syncing. It probably won't be too bad on Youtube based footage, but it is almost impossible to play footage at X frames per second, and record it with a capture program like this at the same FPS. You will almost always get uneven FPS with this approach, regardless of what it claims to be recorded at. It may well look fine too, but it's just a really bad approach.

You wouldn't play a DVD and use screen capturing software to dump it as a DivX, you'd take the original data stream and convert it. This is the correct approach.

edit - oh dear, the software actually suggests you do this to convert DVDs! bad bad bad!

You get a bit perfect copy of the video and audio with zero conversion. Presumably this video is going to be compressed, so you're just going from one lossy format and converting it to another lossy format. This is bad

By getting the data directly, it will be the "same" size as what it streams at. Capturing like this as a lossless format = huge files. Capturing as a lossy = less size, but quality loss.

If you're going to convert, always try to use the original data.

Almost certain to be lossy then. That's come serious compression either way for 9mins of footage. I'd check what the original is.

Yep, there are many plugins which make it that easy. If you just search the FF plugin site, you'll find them easy enough

Wow, I have downloaded FF 3.5.2 and after initial testing I have to say ... amazing !

It is user friendly far beyond my expectations ... and downloading video's is a childs play too.

Forget about my postings above and use FireFox instead.
