Windows 7 can run un-activated for four months

Apparantly the 30 day counter can be reset 3 times, resulting in a 120 day total.

That's great for the people who reformat every 4 months!

Yep, nothing new to see here really.

As I understand it though, there's technically no "trial" period as such for Windows and you're still required to have a valid licence if you want to keep things above board, irrespective of when you choose to activate (which may be never if you always reformat before the grace period expires).

if, for a very vague example - there is a LAN party every 3 months, and you reformat before each one... ooooh

Maybe it was just my OEM copy, but it wanted to activate in 3 days

I wasn't aware MS were providing and OEM copy of W7. I thought only retail was available. It must have changed since I last read about it a few months ago when I preordered my copy.

Maybe, but at least my academic knowledge says it isn't "OEM" but Release Candidate

Re: Windows 7 can run un-activated for four months

Well I assume Win7 from the MSDN Academic Alliance is OEM, the rest of the OSs are. They had Ultimate as Release Candidate but Professional is 'proper', available from 2009-08-14 for those with access.
