    ffdshow & surround sound outputting

I am trying to play .avi AC3 encoded films on my computer & pass the surround sound out through the optical cable to my Sony Dg820 receiver.

I have the ffdshow & Media classic home cinema downloaded & installed but im struggling as to where to go from here. Is it just a matter of playing the encoded films & letting both programs sort the sound out, or is there any settings i need to alter?

Sorry for the vague questions but im still very unsure.

    Many thanks guys

You can use the MPC internal audio decoder to output 5.1 - got to:

View -> Options -> Internal filters -> double click AC3 under Transform Filters

Choose SPDIF from the AC3 and DTS radio buttons and Apply it.

That should be you. CAn't recall how to do it in ffdshow as I've not used it for ages, but there should be an SPDIF option under the audio properties somewhere.
