exchange server for home POP3 email account?

    Hello,
I have 5 PCs around the house, and I want to give them all access to the same inbox and sent-items from an email account that is given by my ISP.

I would like to POP the mail so the messages are retained locally by [an exchange server, I guess] and not by the ISP.

Can I do this with exchange server? Please forgive my ignorance in this area.
    Thank you.

P.S, I know webmail would be better/easier, but this particular thing I am trying to do is not for me personally.

Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Standard Edition - Complete package - 1 server, 5 CALs - DVD - Win - English
    £1092.84inc vat

I suggest downloading a trial before committing to a grand's worth of mail server. Especially given there are much much much simpler ways to do it, e.g. with some Free Software.

Thanks dx. Do exchange servers typically work with POP emails though?

Re: exchange server for home POP3 email account?

I'd def have a look elsewhere. Ubuntu server might be worth a look: http://www.ubuntu.com/products/whati...res/mailserver Postfix and Dovecot should do the job.
You won't beat the price and the forums are very good for support if you're new to Linux.

If you're definitely wanting Exchange specifically then look at SBS - think that includes 5 CALs and should be a load cheaper. Don't forget that Exchange 2010 is just around the corner....

You can get 3rd party plugins to download POP3 for full Exchange and if I'm not mistaken SBS comes with it's own plugin.

Yeah, you're right. I really don't want to set up a whole domain and exchange server. I'll try the linux. I hope they have good tutorials on how to set it up...

Re: exchange server for home POP3 email account?

    Hosted Exchange from Rackspace
Or BPOS from Microsoft (Microsoft's version of hosted exchnage) would give you exchange for about £15 per month, plus the license to run Outlook 2007 to connect to it.

Putting your own exchange server in for such small project is still at the cost, plus the associated hardware to run it!

Re: exchange server for home POP3 email account?

I use the postfix/dovecot combination under Fedora - but I think what you want to do is collect all e mail in bulk from your ISP host, and then filter and distribute it to individual mail accounts (or you could set up IMAP accounts). I think you may need to use fetchmail to do that - it is something I mean to do (at some point) but just haven't got round to it.

That said, if you have your own domain name, you can have your MX records set up by your ISP so that they point to your server, but you really need a static IP address for that.

You are probably better off relaying your mail to your ISP for outgoing - saves setting up sender policy frameworks and the like.

Re: exchange server for home POP3 email account?

use IMAP! like the others have said dovecot and postfix (add squirrel mail for webmail) and you have a decent and free mail server! I have one in a CentOS VM and its really very very good. Don't get me wrong exchange is miles ahead of it but for your needs its not worth the investment.

Hosted Exchange is the way to go, if you have your own copy out outlook 2003 or 2007 its a little as £6.99 per month
    http://www.cobweb.com/hosted_service..._exchange.aspx

You get push email included, web access (OWA) and fully backed up and supported
