    Vista / 7 64 Questions

I've never used either Vista or W7 until now, so am hoping you can help me on some basics here.

    • Apparently the firewall in Vista is OK and better in 7. No further tools necessary. Is this true ?
    • I used to use CCleaner on the old XP machine. What is the best tool for Vista and 7 to keep the registry in shape ?
    • Defragging - Should I just use the supplied tool via the control centre ?
    • AV - I've been using Avast for some time. Is it Ok with 7, or are there better tools now ? I'm willing to pay for an integrated firewall AV solution if it's quite light.

    TIA

Yes this is true. I used to use Comodo Personal Firewall Pro on Vista, but now on Windows 7 I use the built-in firewall. It's a perfectly fine and happily functioning firewall.

    Carry on using CCleaner.

The built-in defragger is perfectly fine.

I never used to use a AV on Vista, and normally I wouldn't use one at all. But I've been giving Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) a spin. And I love it. Fast and lightweight.

    Thanks !

I used Comodo as well, but I'll let that go. Do you have a link for the MS free AV ? (I'm a lazy swine...) Otherwise I'll google it.

    Re: Vista / 7 64 Questions

Windows firewall is fine. you can use a tool such as windows firewall control its basically an easier to use gui for the windows firewall.
    keep using ccleaner.
keep using Avast. Avast 5 is out soon and the home version has more feature set than the current 4.8 pro.
once 5 is out you may wish to try the new suite.
for defragging i reccomend mydefrag (formally jkdefrag)
