    Bit of advice please

    Hi All

I'm in the process of Building myself a decent Gaming PC and have a couple of questions regarding the OS and Anti Virus Software.

Firstly, I've been advised to get Windows 7, but there seems quite a few variations of it. I'm basically looking to use the PC as a gaming machine (On and off line) and I have another set up for my web browsing, word processing etc. Would the most Basic (I.e Cheapest!) Win 7 do for me or should I stop being a tightwad? I don't have piles of cash, but don't want to affect the performance of the machine for the sake of spending a few quid more on the OS.

Secondly, Should I invest in one of those expensive antivirus software packages, like Norton or Mcafee or use one of those opensource ones that you see recommended? Again, don't want to cause problems for my system by scrimping.

    Thanks for any advice

    Windows 7 Home Premium
Avast or similar free package would do fine.
    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

    What Phage said.

Avast AV Home edition is free and very good - I use it on all my PCs.

    Re: Bit of advice please

if you have another set up for your browsing, email opening etc.

I would seriously consider either using no anti-virus on the gaming machine (Last time I bothered to check Kapersky was sucking about 15% of my FPS) or disable on-access scanning when your having a gaming session.

If your running as a low rights user (ie NOT administrator) and your not browsing the web, opening files, or on a public network, and you really care about performance, have no important files on the local machine.... *tries to think of more disclaimers*.

For instance my media PC has no anti-virus on it, it is only ever used by a restricted user account, and its entire HDD is virus scanned remotely.
