Software which slows/lowers tempo, but not pitch

    Hello,
To put it vaguely, I wanted to know if there is any software which can do this - that you've possibly tried and that you know works.
Effectively I want to separate notes in a song, so I can work them out.

Most software's stretch the audio so it makes the audio go slo-mo (lowering the pitch) - Like in frag highlight videos for games.

    Thanks

qbase can do it and I think Sony Vegas can do it as well and its not very expensive. I'll give it a go and let you know.

    yep, vegas can do it

CTRL drag the clip. Right Click to properties and change the pitch settings at the bottom of first tab if you want to customize things.

what version of vegas, cause doing that (as Ive done before) still sounds god awful and adds a disgusting echo to it.

I found a program called Amazing Slow Downer which seems to do the job.

Re: Software which slows/lowers tempo, but not pitch

The process you're describing is known as a time stretch. It's a fairly complicated bit of maths and only recently have computers had the horsepower to do it in realtime. However, it doesn't come without its problems.

    1) The further away from the original speed you go, the more the sound will suffer from audible artifacting.

    2) Long files = bigger the files (obviously).

Now, the other issue that you'll have is that any application worth its salt which will do the job properly will be part of a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) such as ProTools, Logic or Cubase. It depends on the end result really, for song learning and transcribing ultimate quality isn't all that important I suppose. If you really want to see some mind bending audio warping, have a look on YouTube for Melodyne videos. That will do pitch as well as time. Wrong note when you're playing in a track? No problem with Melodyne. Can't sing? So what?

am using V9 Pro, but the audio hasn't changed a whole lot in many generations of Vegas. This will work in v5 easily.

Are you using CTRL + Drag to stretch it?

Vegas preserves the pitch by default (as seen in OPTIONS/PREFERENCES/EDITING). You have to muck around in the clip properties via the right click to see what else works best (eg voice specific etc).

Vegas is a fully fledged DAW by the way, and surpasses industry-popular tools like ProTools in most areas, as well as usability.

One can never stop saying Thank You

Surpasses is a bit much - yes it can edit and produce audio, but it's not a professional audio editors tool of choice. But that's another thread in its entirety lol
