    MP3/WMV DJ mixing software

    Title should say WMA!

My decks are getting a hammering when my mates ask me for CD mixes etc and the good old vinyl (some irreplaceable white label) are starting to feel their age. What I am going to do if MP3 / WMA all my 12" and then when people want mixes I can just do live digital mixes for them and keep the vinyl for special occasions. The problem I have is that I don't have a clue what software is best to use for this?

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks.

Virtual DJ is very easy to use and not lacking in features either.

Fire a PM to Lowe mate and make sure he sees this. He's absolutely *top* at this kind of stuff and works in music tech for a living

    Re: MP3/WMV DJ mixing software

Firstly, decide if you want to do your mixing offline or online. Live or pre-recorded. Whilst I appreciate you can't beat a live session for fun especially when you've got a crowd in front of you, personally if I'm making a mix CD or stream I'll create it offline. Doing it this way gives you more time to analyse the tracks, add in effects and loops (which is entirely possible live) and gives you a little more time to experiment. Once you've got the groove going and know what you want you can always aim to recreate your pre-recorded stuff live unless you've done something really silly. Or, you can simply export each track with your edits and effects pre added and then mix those.

For this kind of work, there's only really one tool for the job. Abelton's Live.

Live lets you create beat markers which effectively 'warp' the audio to fit. You can do it in the traditional sense of altering pitch with speed, or you can just change the speed (at the expense of adding audio artifacts). You can also use Live well err... Live It's geared up for music creation as well as DJing and is a real crossover package. There's also the ability to hook up a MIDI controller and then use that to trigger tracks and crossfade etc.

The downside? You're knocking on the door of about £300 for the software alone.

Tractor is brilliant as well, but it's more geared up to a live use only situation. You'll also need a soundcard capable of sending audio to several outs at once for your monitoring (something that any DJing package will need).

Live! is definitely the package you need then. The lite version isn't too bad, limited to 8 tracks, but it's enough for mixing since you only really need two tracks.
