Question I have a dream, but no skillz

Right, in a moment of extreme boredom I seem to have purchased e-peen.co.uk. Now as it'd be such a waste not to do anything with it, I thought I'd use it as a showcase site where you upload your rig specs & a pic or two, primarily just open to the Hexus massiv, and not a profit making enterprise, purely a hobby. Because let's face it, we all like to display out Hardware & show off a bit now & then "Look at the size of my rig" (ooer)

Aaanyhoo, the problem is I have the domain, the time (as I'm unemployed at the end of the month) and the webspace. What I don't have is the knowhow. I have not the faintest idea where or how to start & what to use.

So, my first inkling is to use something like Joomla! perhaps, or am I pissing in the wind there? I dunno, looking for inspiration from those that know, i.e. You lot.

Re: I have a dream, but no skillz

It's been a long while (7 years) since I did web design as a job, but back then Dreamweaver was generally regarded as the easiest way to get into it. Not the most effecient coding mind you, but then again that's not all the relevant in today's broadband age. It was easy though, and that's from someone with no prior "coding" experience.

Good luck with you project - keep us posted with your progress.

Re: I have a dream, but no skillz

I set up a very basic portal for a customer with Drupal. Install Apache, MySql, PHP, drop on the Drupal scripts, drop in a few themes and it's pretty much point and click.

IMO you're better off with a CMS like Joomla or Drupal over something like Dreamweaver, as they're designed with collaboration in mind - users can post articles etc - which Dreamweaver isn't (or wasn't last time I looked).

Have a look at software called NVU: http://net2.com/nvu/ or Amaya: http://www.w3.org/Amaya/ as they are your main Windows based freeware

Any decent CMS will certainly do the job.

Make sure you keep an eye open on security updates etc. And please check that any extensions/plugins/modules you're using are well maintained... you've no idea how much a headache using one that becomes none-supported later can be! (Not everyone's up to fixing their own PHP code )

Aptana Studio is also a good Dreamweaver alternative.

it's what I use at home for my websites anyway.

Re: I have a dream, but no skillz

if you want to get massive skillz to boost your CV then I'd strongly recommend learning some basic HTML and doing as much as you can from scratch. Even if you then decide to go with a CMS, you can pop the original handbuilt site somewhere as an examplke and include basic web design on your skills list...

The other option, rather than a full-scale CMS, would be to use blogging or forum software - I know there's a few open source options around, but can't think of the names off the top of my head: I'm sure someone will jump in though (hint hint).

I'd also be more than happy to lend a helping hand, or generic advice as and when needed, but I'm afraid the next couple of months will be quite busy so my presence here will be a bit minimal...

Re: I have a dream, but no skillz

I'm not after l33t skillz, I'm too old for all that jazz, I just want the easy way. It's not going on my CV either, that's far too cluttered as it is lol. All I'm after is ease of use, for myself & for the end user.

    Anyway, thanks jim

If i was you i'd set up wordpress Mu with Buddypress. That will handle most of the complex bit, give people a way to interact and a way to have their own pages for their rigs.
All you gotta do is worry about look and feel. which is mostly css

Re: I have a dream, but no skillz

Cascading Style Sheets. The original CSS

They control the look and layout of the pages. In current day web pages, the page itself describes the content, the CSS describes the look and layout. Doing it this way means you ca more easily define alternative layouts and looks for different system. So you can set things up to render better in different browsers and handle text read out and brail systems.
