    Audio software question

Having just tried to type this out three times and not getting the wording right, I'm going to copy and paste my friends request from the e-mail he sent me.

"Dude!Have you or do you know of a programe that I can take the drums out of a track so I can play along to it???? Pref ending with up in MP3 format so I can put it on an Ipod!"

Now this I can do with my USB mixer quite easily (and would be really tiresome to have to do that for every track he wants the drum beats from) but am hoping there is some software about that can analyse any track he wants and can then do the above.

    Re: Audio software question

You can't remove mixed elements from a track reliably with anything. Yes you can apply basic filters to remove say a kick drum, but the bass guitar will also suffer. There are programs like Izotope's RX which can remove bits and pieces from audio, but it's not an automated process and the results really depend on the user. Very time comsuming as well. Look for a dedicated backing track version of tunes he wants to drum to...

Thanks for the reply Lowe, I was thinking that myself to be honest.

    Re: Audio software question

Yep, the basic answer is there's no way, although the newest (unreleased) version of a high end audio plugin called Melodyne has been making some noises towards being able to do exactly what you're asking..

Otherwise you can always invert the phase on one of the stereo channels, and it might cancel out what's on the other side if you're lucky (that's how a lot of vocal removal utilities work). I think Audicity (which is free) comes with some utils for that, which you might try on your drums, although I wouldn't get my hopes up on it removing anything

    Re: Audio software question

I'd forgotten about this thread until I saw the reply above, well still trying to sort something out, although I think I will be telling him he'll need to just buy the tracks he wants that are already minus the drum beats.
