Advise needed for Games on Vista 64-bit

I have the MSDN RTM Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit discs and I am going to install one of them this afternoon.

How is compatibilty with games on 64-bit (I am assuming Vista-64 is the same as Win7-64).

Do games run in some kind of compatibilty mode? I have COD4, GRID, CRYSIS, GTA4.

Does anyone have any problems gaming? Cheers!

Re: Advise needed for Games on Vista 64-bit

I've had no problems running any games in Win 7 64 bit so far. Grid and COD included although I've not tried Crysis or GTA IV yet. I didn't have to run any of them in compatibility mode either - they all just worked.

Re: Advise needed for Games on Vista 64-bit

i run vista 64 and have lots of games installed and running perfectly. that is after a bit of fiddling with a few of them.

there were a couple (cant remember which) that you needed to run the setup.exe - not the shortcut or the autorun - as an administrator just to install them.

running the games after installation is very easy to figure out, if the shortcut dont work, then run as admin, if it still dont work then enable compatible mode aswell, it then should work.

theres just haegemonia, gothic 2 and the duke nukem trilogy that i havent got working yet.

those 4 games you listed were designed to run on vista in the first place, so you should have no problems whatsoever. just dont forget to get the latest game patches and directx.

Re: Advise needed for Games on Vista 64-bit

I run Vista & Win 7RTM 64 bit & if anything Win7 is marginally better at running older games than Vista is. Realistically speaking, you shouldn't have any issues with the games you've mentioned.

The only game I have had trouble with running win7 64 dates back to win95, and can be a git to get working in xp.

    Thanks for all your answers.

Can I run in administrator mode by default (as I do in XP)?

I would use a HIPS to secure my system.

to run the game in admin mode:- right click the shortcut/start.exe to the game > properties > compatibility > check the box for admin mode.
Previous versions of windows compatible mode is on that page aswell.

only do that if needed though.

Congrats, thats the most stupid thing i've heard all day.

Considering the gym had to be evacuated because of fire sensor going off, its up there with the lady who was asking if she could shower and get dressed before going outside.

its not advised at an account login level, easier for people to gain control of system via hacking, viruses spread like wildfire (and other reasons i cant think of at the moment)

running the game shortcuts in admin - well if they work without it turned on, why do you need to turn it on?

Re: Advise needed for Games on Vista 64-bit

Besides, if you have one of those games which was developed by a bunch of tools (requires write access to the games directory), then just give the user ground write access to that directory.

As for common pitfalls, some DRM infested games developed before Vista wont run properly on any 64bit Windows. But other than that, usually stuff just works.

Because quite simply that means anything that runs will also be admin - and thus can have it's merry way with your system unhindered. It's unusual to see elevation prompts from games now - the only thing i've seen do it of late is battelforge and that's because the launcher is actually a patch installer (i assume) but i'd of prefered if it didn't (i.e. only requested admin rights if a patch actually existed!).

I just ran XCOM enforcer on Windows 7 64bit

I tried it, but it requires a 64bit flash plugin, which doesn't exist... (last time I checked anyway). Was fine if you didn't want to use flash stuff though.

You don't want to run it always admin as mentioned but as for game compatibility - I've played a fair few older games, released way before Vista was released and they all work fine.

Re: Advise needed for Games on Vista 64-bit

Your games will be fine on 64-bit.

Remember, 64-bit OS's can run both 32-bit and 64-bit programs.

The only things you need to worry about finding in 64-bit flavors are DRIVERS for your hardware.

Most big hardware manufacturers have Vista & Win7 drivers out by now. Vista was released in 2006 for heaven's sake. And Win7 is so similar that it can even use the same Vista drivers a lot of times.

Unless you have some really old, off-the-wall, completely obscure hardware component, there is no reason why you shouldn't be ok to run a 64-bit OS by now (unless you are using XP64, in which case, there are zero drivers and ewww why would you ever do that?)
