    Help, I've been stupid.

I thought i'd be clever, the problem with that is it normally means I make a huge balls up. As usual thats exactly what I've done.

I've got a laptop with Vista basic on it, I created a standard user, enabled the admin account and then hid it. I now want to install some software onto the laptop but it wont let me. The hidden account doesn't show in safe mode as this feature was removed after XP. I cannot right click and run as, if I right click the exe, shortcut or whatever and try to run as administrator it just opens it with the standard account.

If i try anything in regedit or local users and groups I just get access denied messages.

Thanks for looking, any help would be grately appriciated.

Click Start (or the Orb) and in the search box type cmd

Hold down Ctrl and Shift and then press Enter.

In the command prompt type net user administrator /active:yes and press enter.

Reboot and you should see the Admin account.

What is the error message and at which point does it occur?

Are you sure it doesn't show up in Safe Mode, as I did something similar in Windows 7, and Safe Mode saved my butt.

That wouldn't work as he is running from a standard user account, and he can not run CMD with elevated privileges.

My understanding was that he would be prompted by UAC to enter a password to authorise the elevated command prompt.

    Re: Help, I've been stupid.

if you have a windows disc run the command from the windows disc by using the repair section on the first step just after selecting keyboard and language settings. small button near the bottom of the screen.
if you dont have a windows disc download the recovery options only iso from here im hoping you know if its 32bit or 64bit so you know which one to download.
that tool has saved my butt before.

just remember next time create an admin account first then drop your account to standard user then disable the standard admin account.

Not sure if this would work on Vista home, but...
Get to the logon prompt, you may have to let it auto logon as the only user, then log off again. Then press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice fairly rapidly. That should then give you a standard domain style logon prompt where you can type in a user name and password.

Classic logon dialogs were removed in Vista & 7.

Not doing well, my second correction so far today. I'm going to go away now, before I start to feel silly...
