Question 7 switches to low-graphics mode at 0000

Some of you might remember I posted a while back about Windows 7 switching to low-graphics mode ie opaque window borders, smaller window buttons etc (like what happens if you run the Windows Experience Index benchmark) at exactly 00:00. This has only happened once until now but it's just happened again. It's no big deal and is corrected by a reboot but I'm guessing it's something MS might want to know about - has it happened to anyone else? Are there any logs etc I should save incase they're needed?

    You running the RC?

    Or a dodgy copy?

If its the latter, then I think your at the mercy of your own stupidity.

As for switching off areo glass, this can be switched on without a reboot normally, for instance my power plan i have on my ultra portable switches it off at 40% battery. Or on max battery mode from the start.

It's a valid copy of the RC.

Check the date on your PC - they are set to expire after a certain time and will start disabling features when this date has been reached.

I keep the time/date synced with Internet time so I doubt it's that. Thanks anyway though.

Re: 7 switches to low-graphics mode at 0000

Good thinking. The following events appear just after 00:00:
A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (Windows System Assessment Tool)
The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application
The Desktop Window Manager has exited with code (0x40010004)
The winlogon notification subscriber <SessionEnv> was unavailable to handle a notification event.

What a weird issue. Running 7RTM here and I’ve never experienced that, so it’s safe to say it’s been fixed. It could be the time bomb in the 7RC code going off, but that isn’t happen until next year.

Yeah I can't think what would cause it. Maybe something to do with a bug in the expiry date thing? It's only ever happened twice though for some reason - I've had more BSODs than that!

This is perfectly normal - it was just running the windows experience score test. While doing so it disables Aero - if you let it finish Aero pops back without any problem and it won't happen again.

Mine did the same thing the other day as well, the midnight after I'd updated graphics drivers.

...Read his post again. He wasn't running the WinSAT assement at that time.

My impression was he was saying that it was the automated driver update which forced WinSAT to run in video mode.

I thought they weren't ment to do that? I remeber the Intel ones doing that a while ago with their horrible beta drivers, but not the WHQL ones.

We're all been a bit arsy in this thread aren't we? I think we need more love.

Well the way that I read it was. He was sitting there, the clock went 00:00, and Windows Aero turned off. And he was using what happens when you run a WinSAT assesement as an example of the Windows Aero being turned off.

And here is some FREE LOVE

Yeah that's what I meant. Also about the BSODs, I've made a few posts about them but haven't found the cause yet but it's most likely a driver bug.
