    windows 7. any1 tryied it???

i like to know if any1 have any first hand expereience with windows 7 and whether it is worth it upgrading to it..

i'm still on xp with have proven very stable and reliable. does all the jobs regardless and i really liked it.
when vista came out, i boght it and didn't like like. it was slow and cumbersome to run, and alot of time wasting click me comfirmation. so i wasted £££ for a new os that's not up to par.. now they have windows 7.. is this a ms scheme to rake in more money, or is this os really better??

    Better then Vista? Yes

    By much? Not really

If you didn't like Vista you probably won't like 7, they are extremely similar.

Is vista with some tweeks. Lots from the taskbar to the sidebar have had minor tweeks but nothing is radically different over Vista.

    Yes, it uses Vista drivers.

Re: windows 7. any1 tryied it???

I'd have to say that Win7 is a big step up from Vista personally. I have it installed on one of my laptops and it just seems to work better than Vista ever has. There's not as much nagging, things are laid out more logically and it just seems to work, rather than Vista which has been touch and go for me. As soon as it's released, I'll be upgrading my main laptop (currently Vista Business) to it as I get a free upgrade.

However, I'm still running XP on my main machine because I'm self employed and can't afford for my machine to be down because Vista has thrown it's toys out of the pram. However, from what I've seen of Win7, I think that I may upgrade my main machine after Xmas. It will have been out for a few months and the major bugs should have been found and fixed (I hope).

Re: windows 7. any1 tryied it???

In all the time I've had Vista (x64Ultimate) installed I've enver had a problem, apart from with the early X-Fi drivers. It's been prettymuch faultless & stable, with the only minor niggle being search & being slow at copying.

Using Win7 RTM doesn't seem a whole lot different tbh. UAC is a bit more intuitive, as are the menu's. Nothing stellar.

No, it's a commercial product. That means they charge for it and you can decide whether you want to use it and therefore pay for it, or not.

what i really hated about vista was that there were so many 'click me to continue boxes' in whatever you do..
when you want to open a file, it ask you 'are you sure???'
when you want to install, it ask you 'are you really sure??'
whe you want to run a program, it ask you 'are you really really certain you want to run this program'....

    how pathetic can this get....

what is more, without any decent spec'd hardware, it takes you 2 hours to boot up and another hour before you can click 'yes i bloody want to start this bloody program', so please let me continue'.
yes, i did install it in my old pc, with 500mb ram and 1.6 ghz cpu..

it is not a nice experience all in all...

now that windows 7 is out, i really don't wanna waste more ££ on something similar to that vista experience...

i suppose if i really must upgrading my os , i think linux would be the better option than vista... at least they are free...

Re: windows 7. any1 tryied it???

7 asks the same questions, just like linux does and OSX........it's called security. Whenever something happens that has the potential to cause system issues, it asks for confirmation.

Just like Vista though, you can stop it asking you those questions but you do potentially compromise your systems integrity by doing so.

now that windows 7 is out, i really don't wanna waste more ££ on something similar to that vista experience...

i suppose if i really must upgrading my os , i think linux would be the better option than vista... at least they are free...
Vista is heavy on system resources as compared to Win7 - but i'd still say 512mb of RAM is pretty mean spec for even XP. 7 will run well in 1gb, as will XP so that's pretty much a must-have whatever you do (in my opinion - as 512mb would drive me potty on XP tbh). 7 is a very heavily optimised OS - lots of work went into performance and particularly things like startup and shutdown times (it's very fast).

As for UAC prompts - by default Win7 is set to only prompt when you:
    - uninstall/install
    - copy to sensitive locations (e.g. program files)
    - run software that request admin rights
    - modify sensitive registry locations

All of that is for your protection - and yes, it's really worth having it on as it makes your system much much harder for malware to penetrate. It's adjustable (unlike Vista) but i've had no need to mess around with it at all on any system I have at home. Modern, well written software doesn't generally need admin rights.

I have a celeron-m 1.5gz laptop with 1.5gb of RAM which runs win 7 really (really) well (in fact, XP was *much* slower).

God I wish MS would just give people a 30 day trial of Win7 so we could stop having these threads - the only way to evaluate something is to try it for yourself after all!

Re: windows 7. any1 tryied it???

To add my two penn'orth, I have now gone to 7 as my main work OS, and it's great. MUCH faster than Vista SP2 on the same hardware, and probably faster than XP.
