    HTML tables

    A bit of a stupid (probably) question...but here goes:

    I am making a website for one of the teachers at my college, for his charity which he runs/set up. I have just begun to make it, and am writing it in standard HTML code. I am using tables to put everything in place. While testing the template I have so far, I have notaced gaps of ~5px between cells, even tho I set it up as:
    <table width="800px" border="0">

    How can I get rid of the gaps

    Thx will

    Re: HTML tables

    Could be cell padding. My HTML is rusty but I tihnk "padding=0" will sort it.

    Re: HTML tables

    Tables are nasty - they're not accessible and generally horrible.

    research tableless divs as tak says...

    but otherwise padding=0 or cellpadding=0 should work.

    divs and css are much easier to get your head around

    as a starting point have a look: http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp

    or grab a template: http://www.freecsstemplates.org/

    and have a play around , once you see it it starts to make sense, it's very easy once you get over the initial steps

    Re: HTML tables

    curiously, layout tables have been allowed back into WCAG 2.0 as long as you don't use any of the "special" table features (headers, grouping, etc.). Of course, no UAs are WCAG 2.0 compliant yet so that's kind of moot...

    divs and css. You'll spend about 1 hour learning how to position and size your divs nicely, then about 1 month trying to work out how to make it work nicely with every combination of browser and operating system! But well worth the effort in terms of accessibility and design.

    Alternatively, do it in Publisher / Word / Dreamweaver / some other WYSIWYG designer - the HTML won't look pretty, but you won't have to worry about what it does!

    Re: HTML tables

    thx everyone, have learnt divs now, and it is a lot easier (just need to get it in the centre, somehow align="centre" does not seem to be working??

    But apart from that, I had been using CSS with tables; with a CSS sheet attached with classes, so just had to modify that to being id's.

    Looks a lot better, thx

    edit:: have also tried the
    margin-left:auto;
    margin-right:auto;
    in css to no avail
