What software for my new home server

So far i've always used freenas for my home filer server but recently i found that it wasn't doing everything i needed and it had a few niggles.

so i went to update it to iron out the few niggles and basicly it now wont boot.
I wasn't to worried about this as i'm going to boot into a live CD on ubuntu and copy all the files onto a portable HDD. (i hope )

So i decided that once i've got all my file savely across i'm going to use Ubuntu as my new file server.

Now so far these are the main thinks i want it to do...

I'd like to be able to access file's over the network on windows PC's and network them as drives.etc Now i'm pretty sure i need samba for this but i'm not to certain.

The other thing i'd like to be able to do is to download torrents and add them to the list of downloads via a web iterface. Now there was a really good one i liked the look of but i've completly forgotten it's name.

And finally i'd like to be able to access my music that stored on my server from my xbox 360. Ideally i'd like to be able to access my itunes playlists (The itunes libary is just copied across) and to also able to transcode some video files i have on there (mkv/avi) to play on my 360.

Yes you will need Samba. But it's all in the standard Ubuntu package.

Transmission, i think the WebUI is called Clutch - i believe they are now bundled as a package together?

Firefly and MediaTomb will allow you to do this, although i'm not sure if these are still the preferred option.

Transmission is OK, but it's very basic - I'd go for Deluge instead, which is in the Ubuntu repos and is very similar to uTorrent in its options and configurability. You can control the Linux daemon via a web interface, or a fully-featured thin client (available for both Windows and Linux desktops).

Firefly works very well with iTunes (the package is called mt-daapd for apt-get purposes), but IIRC the Xbox 360 doesn't follow the usual UPnP standards, and it wasn't supported by MediaTomb the last time I checked. You could access files in the normal way via a Samba share, but I guess you'd miss out on the on-the-fly transcoding options, unless you can find another server which does this and also works with the 360...

    Thanks guys.

On the front of the bittorent software niether of them are the one i was thinking of.

I think you could also add files from normal websites to download.

When i see it i'll know that it's it.
