    antivirus/anti spryware?

Well i cant find my key for my bitdefende r(had that free 6month offer thing!) after reinstalling so im looking to get a new anti virus and antispyware combo. Would like to get nod32 but the cost is ~£35 which i cant justify, i found kaspersky internet secxurity for £12 and was wondering if this is worth the cost? Im sure its been asked many times but how good is kaspersky in general? Low resource etc, im using it on a games machine so performance and security are kinda crucial!.

    Any suggestions are appreciated!.

You might want to consider MS Security Essentials, which is free and meant to be very good. Can't hurt to try it: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_essentials/

Thanks for the heads up on the MS offering. Not seen it until now. Been using Avira which I've found to be workable, but the security essentials looks very promising.

    Re: antivirus/anti spryware?

It's a bit soon for me to entrust my PC's security to Microsoft's new AV.

It does look like it could be a (very?) good product, but it seems that malware-writers' focus is now on drive-by, zero day exploits and I want to know how well it does in a few months time.

Maybe no free AVs can effectively guard against people clicking on the wrong advert or visiting a compromised web site..

IMO, people should not feel "safe" if they;re just running a signature based AV

I agree in a way, I'll probably leave it for a few weeks to see how it goes but TBH that's just a part of using Windows and you just have to avoid clicking randomly round web pages and use something like NoScript to prevent being hit by most exploits (they are mainly javascript now). TBH though I'm getting a bit fed up with Kaspersky's memory leak which I emailed them about and was essentially fobbed off by them saying 'we don't support Windows 7' even though I clearly stated I only provided info on 7 to help them, I was asking mainly about Vista which is supposed to be supported. I replied twice more with no reply... I also gave ESET a go, only to find it really doesn't like certain exes which when I download or even move them eset occupies a core of my CPU and crashes either Firefox or Explorer... Personally I'm willing to give an alternative a go!

It's hard to be sensible on the net when scores of "trusted sites" are hacked to install code via flaws in quicktime, java or flash.

I use Windows for gaming and I don't really want to dual boot.

AFAIK no single free product will comprehensively protect you.?

I'm using Online Armor Free + Avast Free on XP
and Antivir + Comodo Free on Win7

BTW, I can't recommend Online Armor enough, but it's not 64-bit yet.

Yeah it is hard but as I've said it's just a problem that you have to live with while using Windows. It's unfair to keep saying about free products not protecting you - Avast and Security Essentials are better than most paid for packages :coughmcafeecough360cough:. All you can do is use some form of AV and block javascript with NoScript when you don't need it (which also blocks flash and QT) and scrap quicktime altogether - I can't remember needing QT once TBH.

Unfortunately only about 2% of Windows users have heard of NoScript.

I left it on my Mum's pc by accident and now she is paranoid to surf without it!

Yeah not many people have heard of it but then again most people use IE and a good deal of them use no AV and download pretty much anything they see.

If your machines security is *that* important that nothing can compromise your machine, then don't use it for browsing or reading email. Or, at the very least, browse and read email in a virtual machine.
