    GIS Mapping

    Hi,

My boss would like to buy a GIS map of the UK. he has asked me to "do some reserch" he would like to be able to pull a map up on a computer and add information to a property.

Then in a couple of weeks if he plots in a co-ordinate that covers that property and prior entered information appears.

We have been quoted £1 per use by OS which is stupid money or we can buy a blank map for £40k, also stupid money.

If anyone can help i would appreciate it.

    Re: GIS Mapping

Not sure exactly what you are trying to say he wants to do but isn't there the functionality in Google Maps to add markers and information to co-ordinates?

Alternatively, you could try Memory-Map which are OS-maps, and the software should allow you to put waypoints in, search for addresses etc.

Not sure if I have understood what exactly it is you want though...

We use various MapInfo products but I don't really know what your budget's like so I don't know if it would be cost effective for you.

    Re: GIS Mapping

We deal with local councils and when we make an enquiry on a property we would like to store this information. For example Queens Avenue has a tree preservation order, and speed humps. etc.

So if we had a mapping software for when we put in our OS co-ordinates it would tell us any information that we already know.

Any thoughts? budget wise, 40k is a bit to expensive, but if there was something for about the 10k mark it would be worth looking in to.

    Re: GIS Mapping

Doesn't sound like you need a map as much as a postcode -> national grid mapping. They are obtainable from the post office at a fairly reasonable price (afraid I can't remember exactly how much offhand though! Been a few months since I looked into it). Anyway, you'd set up your DB to convert the national grid point to a postcode and that would equate to a particular street or part thereof. You can get the boundary sets as well, but they're not that easy to work with. If I was you I'd look for a company that's already doing GIS-based mapping and ask them to do you something custom - working with GIS software / data is a PITA frankly (and I know, I'm currently writing geographical software )

Which councils / what area of the country do you work in / with? I might be able to point you in the direction of local specialists

    Re: GIS Mapping

Sounds like the Google Maps API or using KML files is the right sort of approach to me, depending on how slick an application you're after (or Openlayers, or Microsofts Bing Maps API I would imagine).

    Re: GIS Mapping

I'd watch out for the small print with those APIs, there's quite a lot of sticky T&Cs that go along with them...

    For example:

    11. Licenses from You to Google.

11.1 Content License. Google claims no ownership over Your Content, and you retain copyright and any other rights you already hold in Your Content. By submitting, posting or displaying Your Content in the Service, you give Google a perpetual, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute Your Content through the Service and as search results through Google Services. This license is solely for the purpose of enabling Google to operate the Service, to promote the Service (including through public presentations), and to index and serve such content as search results through Google Services. If you are unable or unwilling to provide such a license to Your Content, please see the FAQ for information on configuring your Maps API Implementation to opt out.

11.2 Brand Features License. You grant to Google a nontransferable, nonexclusive license during the Term to use Your Brand Features to advertise that you are using the Service.

11.3 Authority to Grant Licenses. You confirm and warrant to Google that you have all the rights, power and authority necessary to grant the above licenses.

Are those Google API T&Cs? They look more applicable to Mail or Picassa. If your data is local, I wouldn't have thought you're submitting anything to "the service". Obviously worth checking though, and if even your local data gets submitted (seems unlikely) might be a reason to go with Microsoft Bing Maps or Openlayers or some other alternative.

    Re: GIS Mapping

It might just be a boiler plate license but that came from the one linked from the google maps api web page.

    http://code.google.com/apis/maps/terms.html

You aren't allowed to use the service behind a firewall or on a closed network anyway, it's in one of the other clauses.

    Re: GIS Mapping

Have you looked at QGIS? Its open source... very flexible. You will always need to pay for a license for map tiles that just the way it is I'm afraid particularly if you are using them for commerical purposes.

I would recommend ARC GIS over mapinfo if your going to shell out for some software but your looking at about £400 a year per license per user.

    Re: GIS Mapping

Should be able to do that with Google Maps and, I think, MS SQL Server 2008 can do GIS type queries (ie. return results within a boundary). I've been involved with a similar application, but not done anything on the mapping side. For postcode to lat/long you can use the PAF data from the post office, for address lookups you could use something like Experian QAS Pro.
