Question Which IT Asset Tracking Software do you use?

This is a question driven from my own need to either upgrade or replace our existing IT Asset Tracking software.

Currently we're using a product from Alchemy Lab (http://www.alchemy-lab.com/products/atn/) which is very tidy and provides a great deal of info covering both hardware and software installed on target machines. It's also acceptable value.
However it doesn't deal with Linux and therefore cannot analyse a small but important number of servers and desktops we've deployed.

How does the software you use perform?
Does it cover the Linux gap?

Most importantly would you recommended it?

    Home Grown CMDB here.

Microsoft SC:CM pull in a lot of the software inventory - getting something like that to run in linux is going to be a challenge assuming you dont have any common authentication set up on your *nix environment ?

We badly need to drive Excel out of this business.

Moby you're right - our *nix boxes are individually configured - there have been too few until recently to warrant it.

Why ? its an extremely powerful application if used correctly. for example as the front end to a reporting database containing your Configuration Items.

Ah yes but that's part of the point.
We employ people to be data literate, not IT literate (so it seems) - just explaining the concept of relative paths befuddles most it seems.

Yesterday I was asked if I could help a user who spends 2hrs+ each week on one particular Excel task.
He creates a copy of a file each week, then does a find/replace on some file names in vlookups before manually editing every vlookup with the date.
Of course the data being looked up is currently three levels up then two down and includes the explicit share name.

It's screaming out for a database backend. Instead I'll endup creating something with a concatenated formula using relative paths so he only has to change a couple of fields and away he goes. Except I'm on a different site with different shares and the relative paths are screwing up.
I've no doubt I'll fix it but frankly I've a website to build, video to edit, vmware upgrade to plan and mother-company audit to prepare for and that's just today!

Excel is brilliant. It's also the key reason we may never have automated archiving or a correct file structure.

Therefore today I'm mostly hating Excel.

I know that feeling! I remember building and maintaining an Excel based stock control system for a company, took them 18 months to even think about replacing the system with a properly integrated one. The slightly scary part is looking back over it, with it's VLOOKUP's that broke regularly or the dodgy looking VB macros it makes me cry

On the plus side meant I went from a temp for a week to a fully paid employee for 2 and a bit years

That said, I use Excel for asset tracking here, because we've only got a couple of dozen machines and infrequently replace them.

Re: Which IT Asset Tracking Software do you use?

Moby she gets in from work and refuses to look at a PC unless it's to play WOW. She spends all day either editing in Edius or managing a team doing it - so I guess I can see her point!

Besides she'd charge as it's for my work lol.

Phage as mentioned above the software we use does inventory all the installed software on scanned PC's. However MS'd own free tools are better at dealing with software licenses. It depends what you need TBH.

Started back when it first came out in beta in about 2006 (?) and love it.

Blimey, it's a little bit clunky with all the fancy inline changes and all that, but what a great bit of software it is thank you

I need to build an inventory of our Tech contractual spend. Sooooo, MSoft and the desktop environment isn't too hard as they are tied up a less than a handful of contracts. It's all of the trading systems, network tools, and other unknown gubbins I need to track down. I have a basic (Excel) list that I built by asking around, but to manage procurement going forward I need more.

    It's a global megacorp. Total spend ~USD300m.
Yes I am the only Tech accountant. I used to have a team including an Access/Excel guru but they all got laid off. So did my boss, so there's always a silver lining !

It used to be a lot more simple, but they discovered flashy stuff (AJAX?) and went a bit OTT.

Enjoy it, there's lots of support in the Community section

Re: Which IT Asset Tracking Software do you use?

We use Centennial which is provided by Front Range. Supports Linux with a manually install package but you can roll out to windows via a domain / ad lookup or ip ranges with a remote install.

As for the software, its good in its own way. You can run queries on various items on hardware or installed software however you have to embed various queries in order to run searches on multiple aspects.

It does have a nice feature where it will pickup managed switches and detect what ports equipment is installed on. This allows you to track locations of equipment if it moves between these switches.

If you wish, Pm me your details and I get can a decent distributor to give you a call. They were pretty good with us, providing an extended trial etc.

We use Kaseya (www.kaseya.com) to manage a bunch of workstations over multiple sites.

Does Hardware audits - can be schduled to be done daily etc
Software Audits- incl pulling the software licences keys from each machine
    Ticketing
AVG AV if required via Kaseya Endpoint Security
    BUDR via Acronis Trueimage server
Windows updates (very granular updating if required)
Monitoring of servers based on event logs (very very powerful)
Remote connections to all workstations via VNC/ Terminal serivces.

There are a couple of hosted resellers of this app in the UK. Rather than give them free advertising via Hexus PM me and I can let you know who they are if interested.
