How do you organize your movies?

I have a lot of movies. Some of them are on DVDs. These ones are placed on a book shelf. Another ones are on my hard drive. And all of them are in Movienizer - a movie organizer program.

And what about you? Where do you store your movies?
Does anybody tried a CD revolving rack?

The ones on your hard drive are likely illegal.

You can't (and you should not) assume as you simply don't know + you don't answer anything by saying that.

I use excel to keep track of everything.

Well, he's right, they "likely" are. And I'd point out he didn't say "are", he said "likely are". Most of our members are from the UK. The term "movies" generally refers to proper films as opposed to home movies, especially if you're organising a collection. In the UK, for commercial movies, even if you own the DVD, you aren't legally entitled to copy the disc or rip it to your hard drive, and if you are doing so, you're breaking the provisions of the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act.

However, "movie" might refer to material to which the person digitising it owns the copyright, like their home movies or films they've shot as a movie maker, and it might be that the poster lives in a country where domestic copyright law isn't the same as it is in the UK.

So kalniel was quite right ... given our user demographics and UK (and many other countries) copyright law, it's "likely" that movies on hard drives are either downloaded or ripped from DVD, and in either case, are illegal where most of our members reside.

It also adds something to the thread by saying it. We have a board policy of not permitting discussion of things that are either promoting illegal activity, or providing advice or assistance on how to break the law. That gives us a fine line to walk. We won't prevent discussion of whether people have illegal material, or the rights or wrongs of it. That's perfectly valid. But if the discussion goes to far, we will clamp down on it. Kalniel, as a long-term and highly respected member, was issuing a gentle hint that it's an area to be careful of .... in case it goes too far and someone like me sees it.

Re: How do you organize your movies?

Oh, and I use the Collectorz database for movies. I also use their book and music databases. I even have barcode readers on a couple of my machines, because I have a pretty substantial collection, especially of books and CDs.

Re: How do you organize your movies?

They are all dumped to my server. Properly name and tagged, so I can just search for what ever movie/film I want. Don't feel the need to keep a database though.

    Organise...? Hahaha!

Shelves + DVDs. Stacked wherever they'll fit.

Helps, doesn't it? Mine aren't USB though, they go between the keyboard and keyboard port, and emulate key presses. No drivers, software, installation, overhead or anything. Just plug it in and go.

Same here, right down to the Ikea bookshelves, though I don't have a barcode reader and usually get it to read the disc ID off the DVD drive.
There's a free version of DVD Profiler too, but the full version comes with full resolution cover art etc.

Re: How do you organize your movies?

Shoved onto the DVD shelving in a haphazard fashion (ie: wherever they'll fit). I used to sort them by genre, but that became pointless when my other half moved in and ignored the ordering system. So I gave up. It now takes ages to find the film I want to see.

Randomly shoved into draws and the ps2 / wii games and put into the space next to the draws
I have kids so anything alphaetical would be too much trouble
Experience is something you don't get until just after you need it.

Re: How do you organize your movies?

Do either of the applications mentioned (DVD Profiler and Collectorz) above have any problems with detecting the barcodes of different region DVDs (R1, R2, R4)?

Also, any suggestions on what cheap barcode scanner to get and use (compatible with Windows 7) and where from?

    Thanks
